What's your typical range trip (#guns/#rounds/time/skills worked on)?

" Quick(ish) story: Last time I was there, he kept noticing my misses were going high (and they were last time, and when I shot at my parents') "

lol at first glance when i read this i was like OMG then i realized im a noob

We don't have a range here. We just go out into the sticks and shoot. And, I just don't go out very often; because, I don't want to burn up expensive ammo. Besides, I shoot well enough anyway.

Normal week-end: 1-3 hours. 3-4 times a month, depending on fishing conditions.

3-4 guns.
1 .22, either auto or revolver, depending on mood.
2. 1-2 Revolvers, usually .38, .357 or .45ACP
3. 1-2 semi-auto's, 9 or .45 ACP

100-200 .22's at 25 yards.
The others, 200-300 rounds, with a mix at 15 and 25 yards.

I might also take my shotgun and shoot Five stand.

If I go during the week:

Same as above in the morning then lunch with a friend, and come back and shoot rifles in the afternoon for another 2 hours or so at 100 yards....................................ck

Starting to keep a detailed shot log

I am on this site that lets you keep an online shot diary: www.RangeLog.com

I began logging range (distance) and total rounds fired after I took a basic firearms course. I just started tracking more advanced options, like shooting position, grip and weather more recently.

Now that the weather is getting better, I am interested to see how I do at an indoor vs. outdoor range.

Indoor range, 1 gun, my SR9 100 - 200 rounds. Usually about an hour. I usually start out at 10 yards with nice slow shots, then again at 15 yards. Then I pull the target back to 10 yards and work on double taps. On occasion I'll go for accuracy at 15 yards but I don't anticipate ever having to engage someone farther than 30 feet away. That's a good way to end up in jail. :p

When I go out to the desert, anywhere from 1000 - 3000 rounds. 9mm, 22lr, and 12 guage. No routine out there, I give the wife and my 2 boys there .22's and we go to town on targets, cans, discs... whatever. That's usually when I'll work on range with my marlin 60.

My wife and I usually carry 2 guns with us to the range. One of which is for us to maintain proficiency for our EDC and another one is usually a 22.
We usually put about 50~75 rounds thru the EDC gun and 250~300 rounds thru the 22. We just shoot the heck out of the 22 for fun.

We don't usually spend more than half an hour in the range because my wife gets agitated by dumbo & the noise. (Really, I would like to stay a bit longer myself.)

That was for the indoor range.

Almost forgot, we work on accuracy, malfunction and rapid fire scenarios.

Other than competition shoots

When I just take the guns apropriate to that comp... Bp, my 2 ROA's & 2 Pietta 1858 armys, Practical, Glock 34, Glock 17, Walther P22, and CAS 2 Vaquaros, 44-40 & 44 mag, Marlin 23" cowboy 44 mag, and Rossi hammer coachgun.

When just going to the range for practice, I usually take 44 mag Vaquaro, Glocks & P22 & sometimes take one of the ROA's (if I can be bothered cleaning it) Usually put 100 thru the Vaq, 250-300 thru the Glocks, and 200 or so thru the P22.

I dont often shoot the ROA other than Bp club days, I like the social side of Bp and get a bit bored shooting black if its just me there. Often tho, someone will want to see the old girl rip :D and I dont mind showing them that 'antiques' are very, very acurate too :cool::D

range trip

Target pistols - usually one gun and 50-100 rounds of ammo. I will work my way through a series of Bullseye match stages. This will take anywhere from one to two hours. The focus is always technique - shooting accurately one hand unsupported. I am prone to certain mistakes; I'll take special care to avoid them. Twice a week. Usually indoors.
Hunting pistols - I may bring two, fifty rounds each though I will probably not shoot more than twenty or so in either. I shoot from field expedient positions - slowly - at distances from 50 to 75 yards. This may take one to two hours.
Target rifles - less frequently than pistols, mostly outdoors. I will bring one rifle and fifty rounds of ammo (.22LR or .223). I will shoot prone at 100 yards. Slowly, focus. This will take from one to two hours.
Hunting rifles - one rifle. Rarely more than twenty rounds. Usually, I shoot seated on the ground, the gun across my knees. I will spend some time shooting from the standing postion, especially with muzzleloaders (go figure). This will take from one to two hours. I try to go once a week during the nicer weather.
Load development/sighting in - this is when I use the bench. How much I shoot depends on the gun. I don't chase groups beyond one inch. After that, I'm off the bench.

Gun=2
9mm and mostly the 40 cal
100 to 200 rounds

I usually start the same way. Human silhouette target set at 3 to 5 yards. Draw from concealment and empty a 15 round mag as fast as I accurately can. By this I mean keeping the hits within an 8 inch COM circle. The reason I do this is because if you do have to draw in a self defensive situation it will be a cold draw. No practice or trigger pulls to warm up.

It freaks people out a little bit now because I have really brought my split times down. I am by no means a good IDPA type shooter, those guys are incredible but I have seen a marked improvement since I started doing this little drill. My instructor said if my groups where less than four inches I was shooting to slow and larger than 8 inches I was going to fast. It’s worked pretty good for me so far. Oh, I also do this drill from the low and ready position, basically point shooting. You can’t always get in a perfect stance when the SHTF.

I then train shooting double to quadruple taps with weak and strong hand and two hands. After this I might do a few bullseye slow fire shots at 15 to 20 yards. Since I shoot my EDC guns I mainly focus on self defensive shooting.

If I take someone with me I try to figure out what they want to shoot and take that and at least one revolver/semi-auto, rifle, shotgun so they get to shoot what they want and a variety. I don't have too many guns yet so that usually works out to about 5.
Otherwise I take one gun I want to specifically work on with less than 100 rounds and do malfunction drills. Then I shoot the crap out of my Ruger MKII.

# guns: 2- P239, P22
# rounds: 200-300 .9mm, 100 .22
time per trip: 1-1.5 hrs.
frequency: twice a month

I start of with my carry ammo, GDS short barrel and shoot three magazines at about 5 yards. These are mostly DT's or "Mozambique" type drills. Then I move it out to about 10 yards, then 15 yards and finish up at 25 yards. Lately though, I have been doing allot of 25 yard shooting as I try and maximize my range time. Slow shooting, Pulling the target back evey time to check and mark groups really stretches your time shooting. As for the .22, thats the last thing I do (even though I should probably do it first) and by then I'm tired and hardly aiming.

These days? Less than I'd like.
1 or 2 times per month. Two firearms, usually (those that are regularly carried): G19/32 and the 1911Sc commander. Practice inlcudes:

Strong side, 1 handed (50% -> 90%) ot the rounds fired;
Weak handed: at least 1 magazine;
Lots of slide lock with various numbers of rounds loaded;
Load some empty shells to practice clearing jams and FTFs (have the partner loaded in random order, random amounts);
Use abstract targets so it forces me to visualize (FBI "Q");
Number of rounds fired: ~200 -> ~ 400
Wear the exact same holsters I carry.
Distances: 70% at around 10 yards, max (usually 10 -> 15 feet);
Elapsed time: 1 hour, max.

What I don't do that I should: practice more with the the 442 (carried a lot in the warm months); it's just not fun to shoot! :eek:

The sportsman's club range where I'm a member is only 4 miles away from my home, so I can easily go a few times a week. While they have a nice indoor range, I almost always use the outdoor ranges, unless there's a LOT of snow on the ground. The vast majority of my time is spent on the bullseye range, slow fire, shooting at 25 and occasionally 50 yards. I usually take one .22 and one centerfire handgun, typically firing 50 rounds through each.

Once a month I put 100 or so rounds through my carry weapon on the PPC range, working on a smooth draw and double tapping multiple targets at ranges from 5 to 15 yards.
