What's your take?

I've never used a turret to dial in elevation while in the field. I can see where some folks would find it useful, especially in wide-open places where the ranges are long. The woods I hunt, the ranges are a lot closer and I don't know that I'd pull the trigger on a game animal over 300 yards away. Heck, from my favorite stand, I can't see more than 250 yards, so this whole exercise is hypothetical.

The question is: What works best for you?

There are so many types of reticles that I keep a notebook with me so I know what my holdover points are or how many clicks up or down for each 100 yards and for each caliber when at the range.

Nikon has the spot on application and that helps a lot with their BDC scopes.
Heck you can even use it to find out how high you shoot at 100 to have your rifle zeroed out to various distance with whatever caliber and specific ammo.

For plain fun, I use iron sights. :D
