What's your minimum BUG?

Interesting version of the caliber and ease of carry debate.

If it's difficult to conceal a 45, so it's difficult to conceal 2 45s. So try one 45 and then a 22 NAA because the latter is easy. But wait it won't stop a zombie-meth-mutant biker. So don't carry the NAA at all as a bug even though it would work on the majority of folks.

Make any sense except for caliber chest pounding?

My curiosity is aroused, if MTT TL has a .45 Colt (the big revolver cartridge, not a .45ACP) in his back-up derringer , what is his primary gun?

When citizens start seriously considering back up guns, i think paranoia, fear and obsession have reached unacceptable proportions. And when someone starts preaching that small calibers will not work for self defense, I maintain they have no experience to back it up. I knew a fellow who defended himself from a robber who had a knife, with one of the NAA mini revolvers. He shot the felon up close, in the face, and the man fled. The victim also wisely fled. That is the purpose of those firearms. And they work. Assassins use .22 LR and get the job done when they could easily carry larger calibers. Look it up.

I think that once you start listening to gthe siren calls of gunwriters, self proclaimed demigods and other "experts" ranting about "mouse guns" you have followed them off the deep end into self delusion.

tell us how you really feel:D

I cant CC as im in CA but i agree with you and if I could carry it would a single gun (Kahr PM9) with no back up and no extra mag.

Teuthis, I think I understand what you mean and where you come from. But judging another's choice/opinion when you do not know them, concerning a subject that has no right or wrong/black or white answer surely can't be good for us as a community of gun owners.

And I agree that mouse guns are fine for self defense. The best choice? It's a BUG so let's not sweat it. It's not worth getting upset over.

Comforting & comfortable, BUGing...

As sworn LE officer, USMC combat veteran and instructor Clint Smith says; "Concealed handguns should be comforting, not comfortable." ;)

I honestly don't know or understand where some of these member's remarks are coming from. Is it; don't listen to sworn LEOs or tactics trainers? Don't carry BUGs or extra/spare pistol mags AT ALL if you are a armed citizen or CWP holder? Small caliber(under .38spl or .380acp) firearms could protect you in a real critical incident?
Members can say or do what they want, but why use the "don't tell me what to do" or "I don't care what sworn LE officers or military combat veterans say" logic?
About 2 years ago, a young off duty officer in a Utah mall shot at a active shooting subject(a deranged man who went on a shooting spree). The cop ended the event with the LAST .45acp round in his 1911a1 pistol. He had no spare magazines or BUGs on him!
The brave LEO was given a service award for his actions and said openly that he'd carry at least 2 spare pistol magazines even on his own time.
This incident is what some progressive hipsters would call; "a teachable moment", :).

If this is the Trolley Square shooting, that is not what happened.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utah_mall_shooting

On February 12, 2007, at 6:44 PM MST, Sulejman Talović began a deadly shooting spree in Trolley Square resulting in the deaths of five bystanders and the shooter himself,[1] as well as the wounding of at least four others. Talović was described as wearing a white shirt, a tan trenchcoat and a mullet.[2] He carried both a shotgun and a handgun,[3] as well as a backpack full of ammunition.[4]

The gunman's rampage was stopped after trading shots with off-duty police officer Kenneth Hammond of the Ogden City Police Department and Sgt. Andrew Oblad of the Salt Lake City Police Department . The final confrontation, in which Talović was killed, occurred in the Pottery Barn Kids home furnishing store.[5] Hammond was at Trolley Square with his pregnant wife, 911 dispatcher Sarita Hammond. Sarita borrowed a waiter's cell phone to call 911.[6] Talović was cornered and was shooting at officers, until an active shooter contact team composed of Salt Lake City PD SWAT team members arrived and shot him. Salt Lake City police officials on February 13, 2007, thanked Hammond as a hero for saving countless lives.[4]

Also, if the first officer ran out of ammo and only carried an LCP or J frame as backup, would he be better off if he didn't have it?

+1 for the .38 spl. +p

my main cc is a Glock 36 .45 acp with an extra mag. If i could carry a "bug" in my state it would be my Ruger sp101, but a 38 is the min. IMHO.

I will assume that this is a personal preference thread so here goes. In a revolver I would not normally go with anything less than a .38 spl. In an auto I would not normally go with anything less than a 9mm (but I have never owned a .380 ACP long enough to carry). Having said that there has been times with my CCW carry has been a .22LR (semi-auto).

For me, 32 acp is about as small as I'd go, I feel if my grandfather made it through WW2 with one it should work fine for me. Don't have one, but still looking.

My main carry is either a taurus 650 (357 snubbbie, but i carry it with 38spl+p most of the time) or Cz PCR in 9mm. So I'm not one feels he has to have a 45 or bigger.

I'd like to get a little 380, really like the Sig 238, but my state doesn't really allow for BUG carry so it'd be more of a when nothing else fits type gun.

Also I'd have to get 2 of them because my fiance thinks they are cute and has already said it's hers if I buy one. :D

My budget at the moment won't allow for that.

Browning .25acp, Air America, SE Asia...

Many years ago I read a gun magazine article where the writer brought up a contract helicopter pilot he knew in SE Asia. He said the chopper pilot worked for Air America, the CIA's not so covert air support firm to fly weapons, troops and supplies in the area. The Air America pilot would fly missions armed only with one pocket size Browning .25acp pistol!
The pilot's choice may be rare but it shows how some may choose to arm themselves.

Spitballs and bad language.

I'll use whatever I can get. I won't turn my nose up at a single-shot .22 derringer as a BUG, if it was all I could find a way to carry.

"Have a gun" always trumps failing to have one.

For me, it's an easy choice: Ruger [no surprise there] SP-101 loaded with 110 grain JHPs. It's what I carry for a BUG on uniformed patrol, and though I sure hope I never need to use it [or any gun] for real, I know it'll be up to the task if need be. Off-duty, I usually tote my Ruger P-90 with at least one reload. Maybe using my BUG off-duty would be a good idea. As an aside, it's a lot of fun when I show up at the range to qualify with it. All the younger officers are qualifying with their sub-compact Glocks and Kahrs. So what you hear is a lot of small-caliber "pop" being rhythmically drowned out by a comparatively big "BOOM" . The new guys next to me on the line will often stop shooting and just turn to look at me, mouths agape, as that SP just keeps roaring and belching flames. Hilarious. :D

I don't have a safe full of choices, so I need to be realistic about my answer. My son has his Browning slab side, .22 Buckmark in my safe.

I have absolutely NO qualms carrying it as a back up for my regular carry piece should the 1911 be unavailable for some reason. I have a second mag for it, . . . can put 9 out of ten in a 3 inch circle in about 3 seconds, . . . and it has been super dependable since it first came home with us.

A .22 I would not carry for my normal CCW, . . . but for a back up, . . . this one I would.

May God bless,
Dwight

My minimum is .380.

My BUGs are an LCP and an LCR. Both are really light and easy to carry. If it came down to it, I'd prefer the .38 +P over the .380, but the LCP is a lot smaller.
