What's Your Home Defense Setup?

I live alone with the best little watchdog I've ever known! Jake never barks unless there is a very good reason. The boy has radar ears and he's so smart that he actually assesses the threat level outside. I get a graduated alert from head up, ears rotating like a radar dish, to a small "woof" to a full throttle hound dog bark. He is my first line of defense.

I have loaded and chambered 9mm's located in various parts of my small house and a 12 gauge 18" shotgun loaded with 00 buck hanging from a rack. We live out in a rural area where the LEO's are 30 minutes away.

Our road is a dead end and we have 26 homes with every homeowner armed. My neighbor is on vacation and his house is just as safe as if he had never left.

Our neighbors look out for each other! We all know each other, have an active Homeowners Association and we simply do NOT have crime here as there is one way in and one way out.....toes up!

As to the big, black SUV......bring 'em on! I have done nothing wrong and refuse to let them make me afraid. This is Texas and we're still free here.

Well, after several recent break-ins in my neighborhood, we almost got hit today while at work. My guess is our German shepard mix made whoever it was a little unsure about trying to come through the glass door on the deck even though our house is the most secluded on the street. Unfortunately, the next door neighbor wasn't as lucky and her door was kicked wide open (in the middle of the day and in plain view of several other homes) despite the deadbolt. She lost a lot of cash and jewelry but fortunately nobody got hurt. And we live in a nice, quiet rural neighborhood.

This event made me seriously think about my HD setup. I have outside motion sensor floodlights (big halogens) and as I mentioned before a stout four legged son. Even so, my Bushy M4 gery with Eotech and Surefire M300 scout will be locked and loaded with TAP 75's from now on and will remain secured but accessible in the bedroom. I would prefer my 870 but my wife can handle the AR much easier, and I travel quite a bit so that is a big concern.

For thse wanting to use slugs, I recently shot some frozen one gallon water jugs. Federal Magnum 3 inch 1 1/4 oz hollow point rifled slugs put a heck of a hole in the ice and penetrated about 2 inches. I also had Remington 3 inch Magnum 1 oz sabot hollow points. They are supposed to expand to twice their caliber. Well, they blew giant chunks out of the ice and broke the remainder of the ice in half. So, if over penetration is a concern I highly suggest to do some testing. I was actually wanting to use those Remingtons for deer, not anymore (too much damage will be done). And I'm sure they'd stop an intruder in their tracks, but I'm almost positive it will go through someone. Between the 2, the Federals seem to be a better suited round.

don't really want to say too much either, but i feel pretty confident i'm covered. but i will say it includes a shotgun w/ buckshot

I have a dog, an alarm system, cameras and a single shot shot gun under my bed. My carry gun a COP derringer on the belt loop of the current pants I am wearing. Most of the other guns are in my gun room.
Low crime area.

Mossberg 590 loaded with 9 rounds of 00 buckshot, also if i run out of ammo it has a bayonet lug and i do have an M7 bayonet that attaches to it on my dresser.

I have a Beretta 92a1 in my nightstand. It has a ballistic light attached to its rail that would blind an intruder. I also have a loaded Remington 870 with #1 buckshot in my off bedroom. In my workshop I have a Colt Trooper Mk III. In both of my handguns I use Hornady Critical Defense ammunition. Lastly I have a German Shepard dog, but he is all bark and no bite...I would feel terrible if any neighborhood kids were ever hurt by my dog.

I have a dog with a ferocious bark who is very sensitive to strangers near the house. In my night stand is an XDM .40 with Federal HST and two spare magazines. On the night stand are a couple of high output flashlights and my phone. My CZ is fairly close at hand too.

Waking up its my .357 loaded with 38's and my flashlight, both by my bedside. When I get on my feet I trade guns for a Mossberg 500C or a Winchester 1200, both loaded and by my bedroom door, Don't matter which one I grab. I'm old, don't sleep as sound as I used to and wake up easily.

I could always grab a bowie knife, bo, machete, sword, crossbow or nunchaku also in my room but I prefer the gun and flash light, I'm to old for all that physical exercise.

compared to most our home defense is pretty minor. We have neighbors that we trust and communicate with, I have motion lights in the obvious places good locks and solid doors, small(er) windows, and long hallways with lots of crap to run into if you don't know your way around. You're likely to make alot of noise rummaging around the house. Heck, the stairway to the kids room is darn near lethal in istelf for us that live there somedays...Stupid legos.

MOST of the crime in our area has been minor smash and grabs, but like everywhere else, bad guys are getting bolder and the drug scene has been getting worse too.

As far as defense goes - We have a Judge in our bedroom, the little one has a can of mace in her bedstand. The shotgun is kinda hidden in a central location if I really need to get to it, but the rest of the guns are locked away. If I ever need to get that far I live close enough to dispatch that PD "should' be there long before that's necessary

I keep a Stoeger Cougar (because it feels and works like my 92FS but is smaller) in the drawer safe next to me. Two 15rd magazines loaded with 124gr FP's and an extra box of ammo in the safe next to the gun and magazines (I figure 80 rds ought to do it :D). Flashlights handy (all over the place, I kind of collect them, gotta be 4 in my nightstand alone), a maglight (doubles as a club), extra batteries, a cell phone, and a few pocket knifes handy as well. The wife keeps a bat under her side of the bed, the house has an alarm system and security cameras, and the number one line of defense is a large dog. I expect to never need the Cougar.

All I am saying, if you break into my house in the vertical position without my consent---you will leave in the horizontal position with my consent:(
