I was kind of surprised to see the 12 in the lead by so many votes. I have always been a 20 fan till recently when I started using a Savage 24 in 22 MAG over 410 for small game. I can’t remember the last time a firearm and caliber/gauge have just felt so right. I use 4 shot in the 410 and just love it. If the bunnies or squirrels are close I'll send a 22 WRF at them. Yes I use the WRF loading as I have found it preferable over the WMR for small game.

We'll see if this holds true this fall when I take my newly acquired 28 out for everything that runs or flies. I have shot it at the range a good bit already and am very impressed by the patterns that it has been throwing.

I'm not much of a shotgunner and only have two (one setup for HD and one for hunting pheasant and quail) both are 12ga. Mainly do to it being more popular around here and you can get ammo for them anywhere.

No shotgunner here either but I do use them and you are right, try finding 28 or 410 in a pinch; you might as well forget it. Need some 12's just about any place on the face of the Earth will have a handful of shot options when nothing else can be had.
I tend to stray from the mainstream so the odd balls suit me well. I just stock up from time to time and try never to forget my shells when leaving for a day or weeks hunt. A little trick I have found that works for me, I place my ammunition the night before with an item that I never leave the house without and to date have never forgotten my ammo.

22/410 is pretty fun to popcan hunt with.

Are you saying that is all it is good for?

Maybe you are saying that is a fun firearm to use for practice and plinking. It has become my favorite small game rifle.

I have a 30/30 over 20 that I feel is the end all for a perfect one rifle scenario. If I were turned loose in the field and could carry only one rifle this would be it.

28ga is almost perfect - good patterns, low recoil.

Good gague for Skeet / and some Dove or Quail once in a while..

but who am I kidding ( I'm in love with 12, 20, 28ga and the .410 ) .....I don't need a 10ga / or a 16ga ( but I do have a 16 ga as well).

If you did a head count in my safe:

9 12ga
1 16ga
3 20ga
1 28ga
1 .410

Had to go with the 12, you just can't beat the variety of factory shells that are available and easy to find. That and they will put down everything from scumbags to waterfowl.

Have found the 20 to be just as good as the 12 and the resale value is way better.

A head count in my safe would look like this

10ga-0
12ga-0
16ga-0
20ga-7
28ga-0
410ga-1

I voted 28 guage. Overall I enjoy shooting this guage the most for Skeet, followed by a .410. Now these are MY personal favorites for Skeet. When I shoot Trap, I always use a 12 guage, for Trap, the 12 guage is my favorite. When I go hunting Geese and Ducks I tend to favor 12 guage again in 3 inch persuasion.I guess I just can't narrow myself down to a single guage as all have their places in my shooting.
Beside, what is wrong with owning several different gauge shotguns?
Now, if you are going to nail me down to a single guage for all things, which is unfair anyways... I guess it would be a 12. It can do it all, it can do what any other smaller guage can do....I dunno, I still like shooting skeet with a mild 28 though.

Favorite Guage?

Why of course that's a 20 guage. A 20 guage does 80% of what a 12 can do with less recoil. I'm not saying it's the best guage for everything as that would be a 12 but it is still my favorite guage. When I shoot skeet which is more realistic practice than trap for hunting I grab my 20. For most hunting including pheasants I use a 20, choosing 3 inch shells in a lighter gun for long walks in the field. If I want to be competitive at trap, I have to admit I use a 12 guage with long barrel and full choke. Same for late season pheasant when shots are longer. rc

In the UK 12 bore is predominant, 20 bore coming a close second. .410 is also a useful little tool. 28 bore seems to be making a come back over here.
In my cabinet rests two 12 bores, one Spanish side by side game gun and an over/under clay gun. I missed a lovely little folding .410 in a resent auction which sold for £80 / $140 (ish) which I wanted for woodcock.

I checked 16 but it was a toss up with the 28...

I prefer both of these for their intended hunting use more so then the common 12, 20 bore...

Both equal the larger respective bores with slightly less pellets and a lot less recoil...

If I was only shooting sporting clays or especially trap then I'd have to go with the 12 bore...

I'd rather shoot my 20 so I picked it, but I have to admit the 12 is more versatile. The 12 is like the pickup truck and the 20 is like the sports car. One ya need, the other ya love.:)
