What's Your Favorite "Forgotten" Cartridge?

My favorite forgotten or obsolete cartridge is the .300 Savage. It's just a shade under a .308 but considerably more pleasant to shoot. As a .308 may be offered in any rifle once chambered for the .300 Savage, there's no chance this round will suddenly expand beyond its loyal cult following. Besides being effective on game, it was also offered in rifles equally at home in the woods or on the plains.

The .35 Remington is a great one. It's neither fast, nor flat shooting, nor does it recoil much. It throws a big ole bullet that makes tracking unnecessary.

Another great one is the 7X57. Guys who use them love them. Guys who've never used them don't understand them at all.

Agreed, both the 7mm and 8mm Mauser cartridges are great deer sized rounds that usually get overlooked in this age of new wizz-bang marketing of "the next best thing."

When I was a kid, it seemed 8mm surplus Mausers were just being discovered by the mainstream in the US, and before long, a glut of the old surplus rifles showed up in US gun shows. Many of the best Mausers have already been snatched up, but of course they still change hands from time to time.

I discovered 8 x 57 when I was a teenager and never looked back. Love the round and the rifles that fire it. I chose it because it's an excellent round on its own merits in Euro spec and because it is NOT a .270, .308 or .30-06.

Would love to have one of the brand new Mauser hunting rifles also, but they're a bit out of my reasonable price range ($3500  )

If the .276 Pedersen have ever made it past that egomaniacal MacArthur, it'd probably still be being used.

Today, then, it is the .30-06 Ackley Improved. Let's call it the .308 Magnum if you want to "sell" it!

With a straighter-walled case and flatter shoulder, it gets up to 100 fps faster than a regular .30-06 which is nice power and still comfortable, non-belting, recoil. Versatile to reloaders, cases can be fireformed simply by shooting regular .30-06 in the rifle which is another handy benefit of that chambering in a pinch!

Honorable Mention: that 7mm Mauser is indeed a highly underated cartridge though it is long by modern standards. The .30-06 gets newer, expanded, life with the AI.

Ahh Yes, some good old cartridges. I have and hunt with many of the ones listed above. Many of the ones listed above should not be forgotten, particularly, the 7mm, 8mm, and the .35 Rem.

I'll throw out some more good old calibers.

.30 Remington, .32 Remington, .35 WCF, 30-40 Krag, .303 Savage, .303 British, 38-40, 25-20, .250 Savage, .22 Savage and the 250-3000.

Now days if it's not a WSM, WSSM, or some unnecessary magnum, and it's not available in a plastic stock, then forget it, nobody wants it.

I'm glad some people still remember the good one's.

6X47 Rem based off of the .222 Rem Mag, 70 grain bullets can break 3000 and 55 grain bullets get real close to 3500 fps.

.250-3000 Savage, I don't own one yet but it is on my short list.

.300 Savage, just a cool little case that was way ahead of its time. Still need to work out the kinks in my rifle but it should be ready by 2012 hunting seasons.

.300 H&H it is still around but has been surpassed by the .300 Win Mag. If I get to elk hunt this year it will be my rifle.

.338-06 and .35 Whelen, not very popular but except with the people who own them.

.358 Win, one sweet cartridge that packs a tump. This rifle will be my back up elk gun this year if I get to hunt.

.222 remington

Shot mine for the first time today. Such a nice shooting cartridge! It doesn't kick at all, it's more of a gentle push, very pleasant. Only problem is the $18 a box pricetag

Time to hit up my buddies who reload!

7.5x54mm

I love my MAS-49/56 and the perfectly respectable round it eats, but it seems a bit obscure for no good reason I can think of.:)

what about the old 5mm rim fire? what fun it is to shoot

I could've sworn I saw a company trying to resurrect that one a while back. Someone was producing ammo not too long ago, but I just can't remember which company.

.375 Winchester gets my vote as I don't believe the .35 Remington is forgotten or obsolete. .45-90 deserves some type of mention as well.
