Donald--as you know there are a lot of good mid-size 9s out there. An HK would be fine, either the P7M8 or the USP Compact (which despite being called a "compact" is IMHO really mid-size). Other possibilities: S&W Model 3913, Beretta 92 Compact Type M, and SIG P225 or P228.

I'll ring in in favor of the SIG 228/229 compacts, or the SIG 239 'personal size'. The USP9C is pretty nice, too. m (In fairness, I haven't heard any bad choices above, overall)

If you come across a CZ 75 Compact give it a look. The full size CZ 75B is a pretty big gun, but the Compact might just fit the bill. The CZ line is pretty impressive...
