Whats this talk about SIGS being rust buckets??

Since I just purchased my new 228, I have been doing searches of old posts to learn all I can about it. I've been reading posts where people talk about their Sigs rusting, and people saying that they are "rust magnets" and the finish is junk. I once left a 225 in its case in my closet while I served a 4 month tour in Kuwait. All I did before I left was wipe it with a silicone cloth. I came home and it looked like the day I left. It was fine. My home is hot and humid at times as well.

Now for my question.... Are Sigs anymore prone to rusting than other firearms? Im refering to tradional Steel/Aluminum frame types. Thanks for you thoughts on this.

I have both a 225 and 226. I don't use any of my pistols in extreme conditions other than exposing them to my acidic skin. I just shoot and clean them and wipe thm down occasionally with an oily cloth. I see no signs of rust on either of my pistols.

I've owned two SIG P225s and two P239s, as well as a P232. I've never seen a speck of rust on any of them, even though I've used most of them for carry duty for months and years at a time. I think the SIG finish is a bit more prone to wearing off than, say, the Tenifer/Phosphate combo on a Glock, but rust buckets they are not.

I had a sig 226 with the older blue finish and carbon steel rust on me somewhat because of condensation when brining it in from outside. THe new ones are much better.

The joke once was that SIG stood for Store In Grease. Between the prevalence of stainless-slide guns and those with K-cote (SIG's proprietary weatherproof finish), this has improved greatly.

Still, though, a flat-finished non-stainless gun such as a SIG is more sensitive to perspiration or local humidity than more resistant modern finishes. Oil lightly after cleaning or carrying and oil well before prolonged storage in a humid environment and all should be well. :)

My experience with the Sigs shows that they do indeed rust. My new 226 with the blackened stainless finish is much better than my eleven year old gun, but I noticed a small spot of rust on the rear sight (night sights). The older 226 would rust if a drop of water even thought about touching it.

I remove my duty weapon from holster at the end of every day, so I get more holster wear than most owners. They must be kept well oiled, inside and out, to prevent the ugly brown monster from rearing its ugly head.

SIG's won't rust if care is taken to maintain them.

That is quite true and that true of all firearms. However sigs are more likely to rust with the same care than say a Beretta or HK or glock.

The Sig rust thing is like the Glock Kb thing. They both happen but nearly as much some people claim.

I have 7 Sigs, the finishes I have are regular blue, k-kote and nitron. I have yet to have a speck of rust on any of them, all I do is wipe them down about twice a year with a silicon cloth.

My duty gun is a Sig 226 .40 with a nitron finish. I have stood in the pouring rain many times and did not get around to lubing it for a few days. Guess what? No rust inside or out.

Basic maintenance will prevent rust. My Sig was purchased in 1987 and while its finish is worn, there's not a hint of rust on it - and I live in a salt water environment.

I carried a P220 on duty for a short while until I grew tired of having to go to the PD, strip it down, dry it out/off and wipe it down immediately after *each* exposure to rain to avoid surface rust. It was made prior to 1995 since that's when I carried it and it had the blued slide. Out of all the guns I have carried on duty or off, that P220 was the most prone to rust. I had another P220 that had a tendency to rust a little, but still not as bad as the other one.

My Glocks have all seen turd floaters and stayed in the holster for several shifts before being pulled out at all and I have never seen rust on the slide. The only rust I have seen on any factory part of a Glock is on my current department issue G22. It has a small area of rust on the slide catch lever where it contacts the frame, but only after it gets soaked in rain and allowed to "drip dry". I have seen slight rust on the night sights of a few badly neglected Glocks including the rear sight on my dept issue G22. This is not "part of the Glock" though.

If rust is a concern then off to ROBAR for NP3.

Nice finish to be sure but one thing this 2 year rockie cop has learned is that white guns are not good for tactical operations at night. A friend of hime had a np3'd colt 1911 and it stuck out like a sore thumb at night.

JRiggs,

I've got a W. German 228, old gun, with lots of holster wear, and I've never seen a speck of rust on it. I also hate to admit this, but I'm fairly lazy when it comes to cleaning my guns and I once let my Sig go almost a year, shooting a couple times a month, with out cleaning or oiling it. Never had rust or a malfunction. That's my experience hope it helps.

I'm pretty anal about cleaning my guns, regularly and thoroughly. The only gun I have seen rust on is my P228, and that was on the top of the barrel, at the chamber. Now I really go to town on the Sig with the Rem-Oil when I pull it out of the safe.

While my 229 has never shown any signs of rust, I have noticed that the finish on the slide is somewhat fragile. It is so easily scratched, and I am the type that always maintains and cleans my guns after every shoot.

I have also noticed that the frame on my 229 is starting to have these tiny scratches (size of a pin point) along the front strap (horizontal lines on the front of the grip).

While these slide and frame scratches are very minor, I really wish I could get something affordably done to get my 229 in showroom condition.......

Lightsped...

I heard Sig will put any finish they have back on your gun for a rather small cost...Maybe 50 or 60 bucks...Dont quote me on that though...Give'em a call...:)

I've got a 228 and I have never seen a speck of rust on it. I wipe it down once a week with a silicon cloth. Looks good to me.

Well, I am not sure what finish my Sig has on it. I believe my 229 was made in the mid 90s, as the magazines that came with it have a 1994 and a 1995 proof marks on the bottoms. The gun has only been fired 300-400 rounds though.

Here is a pic, the pic isn't that good, but maybe you can tell me what finish this is?

I can make additional pics if needed.
