What's the World coming to?

I stopped in to my local gun shop yesterday and the fellow ahead of me was in the middle of trying to work out a swap. He actually accepted only $175 for a nearly new Smith Model 10 (newer because I spotted the frame-mounted safety gizmo) in trade for an auto made by some compant called "Hi-Point?" The 9mm actually had a price tag of about this amount. Wow ! An even swap of the world's most recognized revolver from a hundred year old company that this fellow could do just about anything reasonably well with, for a hunk of glass-reinforced nylon from a company no one knows.
Sad.
I apologize for the insult Hi-Point fans.

that revolver had to be broken.

If i saw a gun shop taking someone for a ride that hard, I'd never go back, and I'd let them know why too.

There has to be circumstances that go along with this.

Model 10 -- inherited, stolen, broken. That's the only way I could see this happening. I mean, even with the lawyer hole, the Model 10 is way beyond a Hi-Point.

Caveat Emptor,,,

Let the buyer beware.

Or in this case, let the trader beware.

It's a crying shame when someone gets taken advantage of.

I would hardly say Hi-Point is an unknown.

Inexpensive? Sure. Kludgy? Yup. Ugly? Oh boy, and how. But it works.

Semiautos are generally preferred by many shooters today. That's just how it is.

All that said, swapping a Model 10 for one is just foolish. It could easily be that the guy had absolutely no clue what he had. There's more than one person out there like that.

At the shop I frequent, I'd have taken the owner aside and offered $250 on the spot. Even then, I don't know he'd take it, even at a 50% profit.

If I walked into a gun shop and saw a 10 sitting there at $175, I'd buy it on the spot.

That one won't be going for any measly $175.00,,,
If the trader goes back he'll cry when he sees a $500.00 tag on his gun.

Dealer traded a High Point 9mm for an IL equipped model 10? Dealer got robbed IMO. :)

I'd take a High Point pistol over any IL equipped S&W. YMMV Regards 18DAI.

Yeah, I missed it at first that the guy was trading in his Model 10 for that.

Dude left a bunch of money on the table, but that's not unusual in trades like that.

Oh come on you people! He was taken advantage of?? The guy made the trade willingly.
Yep. Free country. To the person selling the gun, the Hi-Point had the same value as the Smith & Wesson. The shop owner simply gave him what he wanted.

It would be a different story if the shop owner somehow lied or manipulated the seller into the trade, but that doesn't appear to be the case here.

You know, I have mixed feelings about situations like this. On the one hand, I'm as disgusted as anyone else to see someone get taken advantage of. We've all seen or heard of the little old lady who's selling off her late husband's guns for a pittance because she's "afraid to have them in the house" and it's a crying shame. On the other hand though, if someone isn't willing to take the time to research what a gun is worth before they sell it, well then it's kind of their problem if they get taken for a ride.

IMHO, Just because someone runs a guns shop doesn't mean he has to babysit every adult that walks in the door.

The M10 owner accepted the deal, the GS owner is in business to make a profit (NOT a dirty word in America), and "The customer is ALWAYS right".

.

Maybe he's just not a wheel gun guy. A nice revolver means nothing to him.

I'm not a revolver guy either and would gladly trade for a nice auto loader. Notice I said nice.
Even a revolver in great shape does nothing for me. Sorry wheel gun guys.

Maybe he got it as a gift from his ex-wife and it reminded him of her.

Do gun shops automatically check to see if the gun is stolen? I don't know, I've never sold one to them or a pawn shop.

The person with the model 10 did'nt know what he had. Or he did, and had good reason to want to get rid of it.

And it could have been worst. He could have traded for a Raven .25cal

(no dis-respect to any Raven collectors out there)

If the person trading the gun felt he got a good deal, then no one got ripped off - just because something has more value to YOU does not mean it holds the same value to everyone else - and this forum is a great example of that principle.
