For me, decent translates to "gun I would bet my life on, right out of the box." My budget limits me to about $500 for a new one. With that being said, I like my Ruger KP90. $420 at my local shop, added Hogue grips for les than $20. And, it goes BANG! every time I mash the trigger, no matter whats in the chamber.

I like the feel of the Kimber line, just too pricey for me.

I probably top out at about $500. I guess I'm a "more bang for the buck" kind of guy. I just don't think I'd get anything more out of a $1000 1911 that I'd get out of a $450 CZ-97.

Besides, if I ever did have $1000 to spend on a firearm, it would be an Garand or maybe even an AR before it would be a pistol.

Maybe i'm just naive, but there's no quality you can buy for $1000.00 + that you can't buy for around $500.00.

None of mine cost over $500.00, and i have a (all new) CZ-75, Browning Hi-power, Glock 26, and Sig P230. Even if I buy that Beretta 92 I've been eyeing, still i'll never go over $500.00.

Value and quality go together just fine.

Don't be an "impulse" buyer like me!!

Are there recovery clinics for obsessive/compulsives like me to go to and get straightened out? I've purchased handguns only to get them to the range or home and realize I had made another snap judgment with my hard-earned money.

No more. Me and gun stores are like fat ladies and all-you-can-eat buffets: a situation that calls for evasive action or more will-power than I can muster.

My well-intentioned advice to all of you from one who has learned from bitter experience? Do your research! After you're done, do some more. Shoot the guns you want - either a friend's or rent one at a gun range.

Just buy the very finest weapon you can afford and be done with it! I can't emphasize this enough.

As far as the poll goes, I was rather amazed at the number of pollees that picked over $1,000! Wow, must be a bunch of custom-built .45 hot-rods out there.
