To some people cost isnt an issue as long as they get what they want..but still...there has to be a point where you say to yourself..enough is enough...I guess I'm willing to spend a max of around $800.00...What about you guys ??

I'm willing to pay over a grand (not that I'll ever have that disposable income anytime soon) for one and only one pistol, the Walther P88. I'll only pay that price cuz I've always wanted one and you pretty much aren't gonna find one cheaper than that.

What do you mean by "decent"?

I would only be willing to spend $300-$400 for a pistol that is only decent, but I would spend well over $1000 for an exceptional pistol. I'm planning to spend probably over $1000 on a P7M8 in the next few weeks. There aren't many other pistols that I would spend that much on.

I usually don't suffer from sticker shock until I get to $1000 or more. Then it takes a while to justify the expense...I've justified that price 2X's
As for a "decent" pistol. The guns I've been looking at lately don't sell for less than $400 used...

$700 has been my limit so far. I figure if I can't buy a good handgun with night sites for that price there's something wrong.

I'm not into 1911 style handguns, so that's never been a problem.

$400 for a decent pistol. (i.e. used Glock)
$700 to $800 for a great pistol. (i.e. Springfield or Kimber 1911)

I've never seen any pistol that was worth more than $400.00.

But any pistol worth a bucket of warm spit is priced at least that...

(Relax guys, I'm just whinin' things cost too blamed much!)

Someday I may be willing to spend about $1100 for one of the Kimber CDP series pistols. Other than that I don't see the point. There are plenty of good guns in the $400-700 range (CZs, "base" SAs and Kimbers, some SIGs, Rugers, just about any revolver, Kahrs, etc). Since I'm not a competition level shooter I don't see the point of buying a $2000+ Wilson or Les Baer, even if I had the money. I don't doubt that you'd notice a difference in the feel between that and one of the $1000 guns, let alone a $400-700 gun, but for those of us who don't shoot in serious competitions is it really worth the price difference?

Oh, as for the poll, I voted for $700-800. That is my usual max, and I haven't yet, and probably very rarely will, go over $500. The Kimber CDP is a one time exception so I didn't let that change my vote.

It definitely depends on the definition of "decent," and also why I'm buying it and how good a deal it is.

The last one is especially important because you could always sell without taking a bath.

Guns that are overpriced:

HKs, Sigs, some Glocks, most 1911s, *&* revolvers. These are all great guns but they have no business being that expensive because of...

Guns that are good deals:

CZ, Ruger .22s, many rifles.

I'm a target shooter so I spent the bucks on a Kimber and the best Ruger .22 (along with great grips). But the most reliable, impressive gun I have is my CZ Compact.

I agree that you can get decent guns at reasonable prices, but until they start selling HK P7's and Sig 210's at half price whats a guy to do..:D Unless I'm mistaken Chevy's still costs less than Caddy's. They will both get you there tho...

My CZ 75B was a deal at $325.00. My 3 Glocks were average from $460 to $490.00. Then the Walther was priced for the area at $650.00.I think $700 would be the most I'll spend in my price range and budget needs.SAFE-SHOOTING!

I paid almost $1600.00 for a Kimber Super Match; it's a hell of a gun. I am also happy with my CZ70 {79.00} and my CZ52 {119.00} I am an equal opportunity gun buyer.:D

didn't cost but $639.95 + 8% sales tax; and it has performed
remarkably well. So there is no sense in spending any more
hard earned green back's. :D :)

For a decent pistol I would pay around $500.00 or $600.00.

For a hand built peice that is by all accounts better than I am and not something that I'm settling for? As much as the gun costs.

Those people that can't fathom spending over a thousand on a gun must not have ever experienced the feel. It's like the difference between a Ford Taurus (not a bad car)and a BMW M5 (a truly superb piece of enginerring) both have the same capacity and both will get the job done but one instills more pride of ownership. I'll keep both the guns and the BMW til I'm too old to play with them anymore.

I paid $1k for a Bob Chow (former Olympic shooter turned gunsmith) 45 Colt. Besides being worked over, it also featured real ivory grips. I thought the gun (unfired) was a bargain.

$800 is about my limit for a top-of-the-line pistol. Rather than pay $1300-1400 for a new Sig P210, I'd look for a used model. I paid about $800 for a used P7PSP, but would never pay what the new ones go for. Naturally, I've picked up most of the bargain quality guns such as the makarov, CZ75B, FEGs, Bersa, etc. and I consider LNIB revolvers great value.

My rationale is that I don't spend thousands of dollars on a daily carry gun because if I do shoot someone and it gets confiscated, or if it gets lost / stolen, I want to be able to replace it readily and not have the skill set transfer over.

For example, my 1911 cost me around $1500. My USP cost me $500. My Glock $400. I love the 1911, but I carry the USP daily. If it goes missing, I can replace it from just about any store.

Those Gee Whiz super-package customized 1911's are great, but I just prefer my stock USP.

"decent" in my context would be a gun i would carry and trust my life to without ANY custom work. well i have my...

hk p7m8 (refurb) - 650
hk p7 psp (new, but along time ago) - 450
beretta 96 (trade, satisfaction of debt) - 450

now i also have a sig 220 that i paid $470 for that i liked well enough to have custom work done to really make it "nice"...it will have about 1k into it
