Whats the LARGEST caliber you would carry for self defense?

I have a 45 colt for hunting, but 90% of the animals I've killed in the woods, have been with my 45ACP CCW. Its because I always have it with me.

I carry a .45 acp as my winter carry gun for two legged critters. In the woods, I either carry my .45, my .40 or my .357. If I were going to be in bear country, I'd carry a .44 mag.

My 3 inch S&W 44 Magnum downloaded with 250gr cast lead wadcutter bullets.

On the premis that we are talking about handguns only:

For two legged critters .50GI
For 4 legged .44 Magnum.

That said, these are the largest that I would carry, not that I do.

Currently I carry a .357 most of the time, for either. I do sometimes carry a .45 (ACP or Colt). Hopefully in the next few months, I will add a .44 Special to the carry routine.

9mm/.38 for CC and .45 ACP or .44 magnum for woods carry. Typically it's a 9mm or .38 in my pocket for CC and a .357 on my hip for the woods.

My 26 oz (empty) Commander 1911 .45 ACP is doable IWB, but, it's still no fun to carry concealed everyday. It's best for home defense and winter carry.

What works best is my Walther PPS 9mm IWB.

Kansas is also a state that limits CCW to 45 cal so that's the largest I carry. Thee most powerful would be my 4" 44mag Redhawk. I don't worry too much about dangerous game, but the 44mag or 45 colt would be the most I'd carry unless I would be hunting then I might bring the 480 Ruger.

i have a 40 and a 357, i think that pretty much covers me for 2 legged creatures. i have a 10mm that i'll take up in the hills, but i feel good having the 357 too. i would one day like to have a 41 or 44 mag, though.

.....or Detroit.

HA HA HAAA

well if i could i'd carry hand grenades.

but i guess i'll stick with my .45acp or my .357mags... when i get around to buying a danwesson 10mm ill add that to the mix as well.

i would carry a .44mag or .454 or .460 snub nose if i had one or could even conseal one comfortably

but i often carry a 9mm (PF9) so im all over the board i guess

I'm not sure how to answer that one.

Tell me, which is the largest caliber of these, .45acp, 10mm, .357mag? I'd say .45acp, because it's the largest caliber. But it's certainly not the most powderful of the three.

45 colt on both accounts though I really only typically have the 45 colt with me if I am carrying for woods / animal protection. It also sometimes does house gun duty when traveling etc.

For states that limit ccw caliber is there a list or stated muzzle energy upper limit? I mean the 454 is a .45 and the 44 mag is well a 44. Unless you do energy or list calibers the 45 limit would seem to exclude very little other than the 480 / 475 and .50

If I could find one I'd carry a .88 Magnum. (I'm told it shoots through schools) I saw one in a movie so it must be real, right?:D:D

For me, a .357mag should solve any two legged or four legged problems.
We don't have many large critters in Florida.

I'd rather just carry my 12 gauge Rem 870 (18" barrel) slung over my shoulder for all my self defensive needs. Yes, it's not as easy to conceal, but why compromise on self defense? 000 buckshot for protection from humans & slugs for those gnarly bears.

Largest?

The largest I would carry is .45acp.

The smallest would be .380, and my preferred carry is 9mm.

the largest round I will carry which is also my favorite round - 45acp (Glock 30)
smallest is .38+p which I carry as my bug (Ruger LCR)

To be honest this is more of a comfort level than anything else. we all know that science and technology have surpassed what most of us thought was possible 20+ years ago.

A .380 is a stopper with the right load, but at the same time I would not volunteer to step in front of one just for the sake of doing so even with a light load.
