What's the fastest you have ever seen 9mm? Me: 1467 fps!

That's not a typo!

I was at the range yesterday and a gentleman showed up with a chronograph and some hand loads, some of which were done 20+ years ago by his father.

One of the loads were JHP of unknown bullet weight, powder charge, and grains that came in between 1350 and 1467 fps! I couldn't believe it, that is like 357 magnum numbers. Gun was an old Taurus PT92 which was also his fathers. Just for gigs I tried some of my factory 9mm defense ammo that came in around 1150-1200, what I expected. I've got limited experience with reloading but the cases didn't appear over pressured; primers weren't really flattened out and the cases weren't bulged. Flattened out to me is like when you shoot Hornady 200 gr 460 magnum FTX.

What is the fastest you have ever seen / loaded 9mm?

I have some carbine loads with 90g bullets that are over 2000 fps. Just at 1500 fps in my handgun. Some DTs are rated at 1450 with 124s.

He might have gotten his load data from the Speer #8 reloading manual .
I looking at it and see with the 90 gran. Super-Vel JHP :
8.0 grs. Herco = 1472 fps
7.0 grs. HS-5 = 1459 fps
6.3 grs. PB = 1457 fps
6.0 grs. Red Dot = 1434
5.7 grs. 700X = 1458
5.3 grs Bullseye = 1411 fps

According to Speer #8 ...1350 to 1467 was possible with 8.0 grs. Herco ... different times back then .
... don't load that Herco load unless you verify it with at least the #10 Speere manual ...just to be safe mind you , the world has changed .

While I haven't run any over a chronograph, I'm confident I could get those speeds and prehaps more from one of my 9mm handguns. Wouldn't even think of trying it from my Luger or P.38, but I've also got a Contender with a (short) 6" barrel I'd bet would do it.

And any 9mm carbine should too...
and then some...

For USPSA matches, I have loaded 9mm major power factor to 1410fps using coated 125gr and 1190fps using 147gr coated.

I’ve long wondered about the 9mm Contender barrel. T/C made them because it wasn’t difficult for them to make some and they were in the business of making products for sale.

But who bought them and what was the motivation for the purchase?

I’m being serious. Certainly nothing wrong with them, but a very curious choice with a very slim market of buyers. It might be the lowest seller of any T/C barrel in an established (not a wildcat or resembling a wildcat) cartridge.

Of alllllll the things that 9mm is good at and known for… single shot Contenders ain’t it.

No, it ain't well known, but I've won several bets about shooting the smallest group with a 9mm pistol. :D

Most Contender barrels are 10" or longer. Over the years. I've found 3 (and only 3) at gun shows that were 6". A .357, a 9mm Luger, and a .32-20.

I got the 9mm on a whim and the .357 a year or two later (it was still on the T/c guy's table at another show. Always passed on the .32-20, not that its not a good round, but I'm not tooled up for it like I am for the 9mm and .357.

its really a fun round to shoot from the Contender. The 6"barrel gives it more velocity than what you get from a typical service auto and the action is just more accurate than any tilt barrel repeater I've seen. And, recoil is about zilch.

Plus, the 6" LOOKS short on the Contender, sticks out just a bit from the forearm. Very much makes me think "ARRRR! Prepare to repel boarders!!ARRRR!! :D

1276

I just checked my chronograph data for 9mm . . .

1276 f/s is the highest single velocity (not an average) I've ever personally recorded. And that was with a 124 grain bullet.

But then:

I don't load/test/shoot much 9mm. To me, 9x19 is a utilitarian cartridge. Rarely do I shoot the 9 recreationally; so, it follows I have little data. Further, I lean toward heavy bullets, so loading/testing/shooting 115's is of little appeal to me.

Great, now they are going to be listed for $1000 on eBay as “ultra rare”… :)

As they say in the automotive business, there is a butt for every seat.

A contender in 9mm makes more sense to me than a S&W revolver in 22 Jet.

I know this thread is a touch old, but I just set some new velocity records with some factory ammo today in a short barrel.

Federal 9mm, american eagle, 70g lead free range ammo rated at 1625fps

Fired from my 4in barrel G19

Avg 1693fps on 10rnds
SD 19.06
ES 71
Min 1660
Max 1731
