Whats the Best Sniper Caliber for a Mid-East Conflict?

I once read an article that was an interview of the head of the Israeli sniper program. He wanted a .338.

.308 M-21, or a 7.62x54 Druganov.

Sniping in the mountians and valleys is fine, but if you un into a few enemy you want a little capacity and a semi-auto capability...I'd rather not rely on a spotter/team member.

And I could still make 600 meter shots. thats about 400 more than 99.5% of the Taliban.

Sniper calibers.

300 Winchester Mag with a 220 grain Sierra boatail out to 1200 yards or 404 Cheyanne tactical out to 2500 yards.

As long as we're only talking about Afghanistan, most of the sniper rifles I've seen in the hands of the N. Alliance and the Taliban have been Druganov sniper rifles. So I'd take a Druganov and 7.62x54R.
As long as you can resupply from dead snipers, the amount of ammo to take shouldn't be too much of a concern.

for our guys? .308 -but how can you pick off their CO from every other bearded turban?

Best would be AC130 gunships. 20MMs & miniguns.

The Afghan tribesmen use .303 SMLE Enfields. I would not want to be caught in the sights by one of them.
AK47s and AK74s are for their conscripts & part-timers.

338 lapua retains as much energy at 600 yards as the 308 has at the muzzle.

I shoot a TRG-S (8 lbs before I added the scope, a SS 10x42) in 338 lapua and while the recoil will get your attention, the gun is easy to carry all day long. (It's my mountain elk gun) and I regularily get 4-5" groups at 600 yards, shooting off a backpack or similar field pad.

The rifle is probably perfectly capable of effective accurate fire (and sub MOA groups) out to 1200 or so, but those ranges are beyond my abilities...

I changed my mind!

.300WSM(Winchester-Short-Magnum), still packs the same ballistics as the .300WM but is more compact and can carry more and I just love how it looks:D

For a mixture of longrange HTI and anti-persional, I'd go with the .408 chey-tac. It is capable of 15" at 2000 yds, that is mind you in the hands of a very capable shooter. I also understand that, because of greater velocity, has more KE than the BMG while being 33% lighter. It is super sonic past 3000 yards. It would be perfect for a sniper who has the posibility of taking out people, even behind hatd walls, and tanks/APC's or other hard targets. The .338 Lapua, while ballistically superior to the .308, isn't enough of a HTI round to make it worth while.

Have to agree with the .300 Win Mag as the best (practical) sniper round for infantry. Other than that, stick with .308 and even (gasp!) .223 for shorter distances.

Sniper rifle

If you consider a two man team equipted with a spotter scope and a target specific mission, as opposed to target of oportunity, I think the .338WM would work best out to 1000yds. The rifles and ammo are light enough to manage on the long E and E's and the recoil, with lighter bullets, is managable if you were involved in sustained fire. They are very popular in the 1000yd matches.

No Way Jose!

We use the SECRET weapon!

Emirel Lagasse with his full kitchen!!! :D

TURN THEM TO.....THE PORK SIDE!

;)

Pig fat is just the ticket

The Liberals would love to see us downgrade our ICBM arsenal and the military would love to have an excuse to test it's toys in combat. Solution. An airburst Pigfat ICBM. Can you imagine that. Who says it is not a sniper weapon? With a 40,000+ Lb bullet a few yards is the bullseye.

Manpack portable Radio. In my day it was the AN/PRC 77, lord knows what they use today. Most dangerous weapon on the battlefield.
