Whats the Best Sniper Caliber for a Mid-East Conflict?

If we had to fight a Ground War in Aghanistan or Iran what would be the best Caliber?

I think the 50BMG would be too heavy to move around. I don't think its realistic to think someone could carry a rifle and 200rds of this and set up a position.

The .308 rifles can reach out 800m But thats not very far in a desert.

I hear more and more about 300's but I know nothing About them. I talked to a guy at the range the other day and he said they are much better than the 06. Is there anything lighter than the 50BMG that can reach out to 1500-2000yds?

I stood next to a guy shooting some kind of Lapua round. Is that a specific round or a manufacturer? He said it fired a 300gr bullet and it leveled off at about 300yds. Whatever that is????

Laser beam

No kidding. Laser target designators are the only way to assure targeting in extreme range conditions in a desert environ. Wind and mirage constantly fight the best marksmen at ranges over 600 yards when engaging targets in the desert.

Bigger bullets help against wind but they are no magic and still get blown off target in minor puffs of wind. As long as you have a good support team, you probably can make the follow-up shot but the desert terrain dictates there will always be someone else with your intended target. Can you also get him and his other 4 buddies?

There aren't any Elephant Valleys in Afghanistan. We aren't fighting any real organized fighting force. The Taliban small arms doctrine is one of small arms supressive fire to get the big guns on target.

I'll take my designator and a full M16A2 load. As long as we have air superiority and an orbiting bomber/fighter in radio contact, sniping will be limited to stragglers. Any rifle fire is cleanup. The real ordnance is launched from a rail.

The 408 CheyTac sounds interesting, but the gun that fires it is still pretty damn big. It may be easier to transport than a .50 BMG rifle, but it would still be hard to stalk with. Purely a position weapon.

The only complaint I hear of the 338 Lapua is that it lacks a little ooomph for things like getting through a brick wall.

I'm thinking the Lazzeroni 9.53 Saturn could be just the ticket. This is a 416 Lazzeroni necked down to a 375. Same velocity as the Lapua, but with 50 extra grains of mass and more room for incendiary charge. The beauty of it is the Saturn share the same length action as the lapua, so the R&D is already done. You can just rebuild a 338 platform.

An accurized 308 would be fine in that senario, that's not to sy a .338 might not be the wonder carterage. How often does one have to shoot thru a brick wall to hit a target? If that is a constant or major consern then try useing a 40mm grenade or RPG. I doubt most, if any, shots are going to be taken at an animated target from distance of greater than 800 yards, thru a wall.
