Another rambling reply from Auld Jawn---
The BEST .22 revolver? I have 'way too much background with .22s to make a rational choice - - - -
Some of my happiest times were in the boondocks outside El Paso with my .22 handguns. My Dad gave me a Colt Challenger when I was 15, but I couldn't take it out alone until I was 17. I still have it.
At 17, I HAD to have a revolver and agonized for weeks between the Ruger Single Six and the Colt Frontier Scout. I liked the Colt name, but even then, I could tell that the Ruger was a more rugged piece. Also, it was available with extra cylinder for the then-new Winchester Rimfire Magnum. My Dad died earlier that year, but a good friend of family, Bill Rogers, readily agreed to buy the Ruger for me, with the complete consent of my mom. This good and dear man would be committing a felony doing this today.
The Single Six was thereafter my constant companion in my desert jaunts, and I later took it to college in Fort Worth. Unfortunately, it went when I wanted bigger guns in the ensuing years. It is hard for me to think of a better all around revolver for small game hunting and plinking. I later got a similar one for my wife to use.
The older model K-22 is/was an excellent piece and I've enjoyed several, but all owned by family or friends. S&W chambered their Model 15 four-inch .38 in .22 and called it the Model 18. It was like a 4" K-22 but for a narrower rib on top.
Unfortunately, a great many of the excellent .22 revolvers of yesteryear are no more. I would love to own a .22 Colt Cobra, Official Police, a Police Positive and/or the Diamondback. All these fine pieces are GREAT for informal target use--read "plinking." Only the K-22 and Colt Officers Model Match could classify as true match target handguns.
A wonderful little .22 revolver is the S&W .22/32 kit gun. Mine is the Model 34, and has a two- inch round butt. At one time, it could also be had in .22 WMR, round or square butt, and with a variety of barrel lengths. I had a four inch square butt that didn't seem as accurate as the two inch. I just had the latter out yesterday evening, and it is still an amazingly accurate and easy-to- shoot little gun. S&W produced a few of their ultra-light weight .22 revolvers, in both two-inch and trail gun trim, prior to the company's "agreement."
Whatever you get, I envy you the coming experience. The sincerest benediction I can give is: May you enjoy your .22 handgun(s) as much as I have mine.
Johnny
