What's the best .22 revolver?

I'm thinking about using a bit of my PFD for a nice, solid .22 revolver for target practice. I want something to use in between bouts of Casull. I like the looks of the Ruger Single Six in .22/.22 Mag. Political questions aside, what's the best? Is there something just like a Ruger I could get instead of a Ruger?

I would vote for an older Smith model 17, with short underlug. They are tack drivers and a happy one will hold it's own against any of the European ISU guns for accuracy.

Sam...sometimes wrong but never humble.

Ditto Sam. Older, pre-agreement K22s are great guns. The old 5 screws really live up to their Masterpiece title. I've got 3 old ones including a prewar K22 Outdoorsman.

I've always had a hankering for a 22 cal. Colt Diamondback, 6 inch blued. But they're not very common and getting pretty pricey lately. Oh well, Ive already got too many guns. HUH? Did I say that?

As far as SA 22 revolvers go, Freedom Arms .22 is in a class by itself as far as quality AND price go. If money was no object I'd have a FA as well.

If I were to hit a BIG lottery, I would buy a bunch of the neat old ones.

Then with the change I would buy a few polititions and a housing tract. Turn the tract into an orange grove.

Another rambling reply from Auld Jawn---

The BEST .22 revolver? I have 'way too much background with .22s to make a rational choice - - - -

Some of my happiest times were in the boondocks outside El Paso with my .22 handguns. My Dad gave me a Colt Challenger when I was 15, but I couldn't take it out alone until I was 17. I still have it.

At 17, I HAD to have a revolver and agonized for weeks between the Ruger Single Six and the Colt Frontier Scout. I liked the Colt name, but even then, I could tell that the Ruger was a more rugged piece. Also, it was available with extra cylinder for the then-new Winchester Rimfire Magnum. My Dad died earlier that year, but a good friend of family, Bill Rogers, readily agreed to buy the Ruger for me, with the complete consent of my mom. This good and dear man would be committing a felony doing this today.

The Single Six was thereafter my constant companion in my desert jaunts, and I later took it to college in Fort Worth. Unfortunately, it went when I wanted bigger guns in the ensuing years. It is hard for me to think of a better all around revolver for small game hunting and plinking. I later got a similar one for my wife to use.

The older model K-22 is/was an excellent piece and I've enjoyed several, but all owned by family or friends. S&W chambered their Model 15 four-inch .38 in .22 and called it the Model 18. It was like a 4" K-22 but for a narrower rib on top.

Unfortunately, a great many of the excellent .22 revolvers of yesteryear are no more. I would love to own a .22 Colt Cobra, Official Police, a Police Positive and/or the Diamondback. All these fine pieces are GREAT for informal target use--read "plinking." Only the K-22 and Colt Officers Model Match could classify as true match target handguns.

A wonderful little .22 revolver is the S&W .22/32 kit gun. Mine is the Model 34, and has a two- inch round butt. At one time, it could also be had in .22 WMR, round or square butt, and with a variety of barrel lengths. I had a four inch square butt that didn't seem as accurate as the two inch. I just had the latter out yesterday evening, and it is still an amazingly accurate and easy-to- shoot little gun. S&W produced a few of their ultra-light weight .22 revolvers, in both two-inch and trail gun trim, prior to the company's "agreement."

Whatever you get, I envy you the coming experience. The sincerest benediction I can give is: May you enjoy your .22 handgun(s) as much as I have mine.

Johnny

My favorite 22 revolver for pure plinking pleasure will always be the Colt Diamondback (4"). Best trigger pull of any 22 revolver, bar none! Other folks who tried it find it to be a sheer joy to shoot. It's great to practice DA shooting with (and speedloading drills with a couple of speedloaders).

My most durable 22 revolver is the Ruger SP in 4". While its trigger pull is nowhere near as smooth, it is much more rugged of a gun and requires less maintenance effort on my part. I also don't worry about dropping, scratching or getting it wet like I would the Diamondback.

Another fun little DA revolver (call me a sinner) is the S&W 8 shot airweight with a 3" bbl and adjustable sights. Slightly over 10 ounces, it's so light you forget you're carrying it. The trigger can be smoothened and can easily be made superior to the Ruger.

For single action revolvers, while I have both the Colt Frontier and Ruger Single Six, my favorite remains the new Bearcat. Smaller than the other two, it's also considerably lighter and no less fun to shoot.

i love my Hi-Standard Double 9. this is a pretty old gun i think it was made in the 40's or 50's but i'm not sure. i got it a little over a month ago. my father was always talking about how when he lived in AZ he used to go out into the desert with his Double 9 and had tons of fun with it. he kept telling me how he regrets ever selling it. now we have this one and its a great gun for target shooting and plinking. i'm thinking of getting another Double 9 or other .22 from Hi-Standard like it.

a Double 9 is very similar to a Ruger Single Six. like the ruger it looks like an old western gun. but it holds 9 rounds and is DA not SA. i wouldn't recommend ever shooting it in DA since the pull is extreemly heavy but you have the option. i just shoot mine as if it was SA. the other cool thing about it is although it looks like a western gun the cylinder pops out the side of the gun like modern revolvers. this makes it easy to load. i highly recommend getting a Double 9; you should be able to find one easily for under $200.

I would just stick with the Ruger. I have a pre-1973 single -six that I am fond of!! :)

I'll cast my vote for the S&W Model 17 or 18 K-frames. Outstanding guns. I also like the J-frame kit guns. Great fun and more accurate than they deserve to be.

I tried for 7 years to wear my Ruger SS out. I didn't even come close. My grand kids will still be trying someday (I hope, unless the clintonistas win). I have a Taurus mod. 94 that is a fine pistol but the Ruger is my buddy.

I'm not sure what political questions there are, but the Ruger Single Six seems to fit your requirements to a "T". They're reasonably priced, and they even have the Mag cylinder in case you want a little more power. :)

SW 617 hands down for me. I like my dad's single six a lot, but the 617 was more accurate for me and 10 shots kicks butt.

Oh, and it also has that great 'big gun' feel to it (K frame I think).

As Johnny mentioned.. I own a X&X Model 18 (I don't know if thats the true model as its occupied the safe for some time now) .22 w/ 4" barrel / K-frame. It is a pleasure to shoot (very accurate) and a good companion for the Model 15 (Which I also own.) :D in .38 special. However, the .38 has a factory installed target hammer/trigger that I only wish the .22 had.

At any rate.. you'll be hard pressed to find a Model 18. In all the gun shows I've ever been two, I've only managed to find one (and that was the last gun show I attended). The gun was in extremely good shape and the asking price was just right -- but I didn't really need another one, so I passed it up. :(

The only .22 revolver I own is a Single Six I bought off a fellow several months ago.

To say that I love it would be an understatement. :D

My favorite .22 revolver: S&W Model 17, made about 20 years ago, with target hammer and target trigger. I also have a Model 18 of about the same vintage, which a friend of mine has been trying to get me to sell him for years. I finally agreed to the extent that my wife will sell it to him after I'm dead. ;)

Anyway, if I were going to buy a new .22 revolver today, it'd probably be a Ruger .22 Vaquero.

I'd have to vote for the 5 screw K-22.
