What's out there in snubbies?

I know the S&W 642 is popular, but I was curious what else was out there in .38 spl snubbies that people used for cc.

I've decided on a revolver for CCW as my next purchase, and I wanted to get a feel for what others were using besides the S&W's.

Thanks.

Taurus 605 or model 85

are both good choices. I have the 605, and with 500rnds thru it, it's perfect. I would buy another in a heartbeat.

Another vote for the SP101. I’ve got a .357 in 2.25 inch but I carry .38 +P (Speer 135 grain). Some people say it is too heavy for a CCW but I use a Smartcarry and wear it all day. Never a problem.

S&W 442

My wife likes her S&W 442 in .38 special. Concealed hammer, aluminum frame and steel cylinder.

I just picked up a .357mag 5-shot stainless steel Smith and Wesson revolver for 300 bucks. Its the 640 model with no external hammer and prints very little in my denium pants pocket.

Have used/shot/handled/carried these snubbies:
* = ones I really liked

S&W 10/12/64 (2")*
S&W 13/65/65LS (3")*
S&W 19/66 (2 1/2", 3")*
S&W 15 (2")
S&W 36/37/60 (2")
S&W 38/49 (2")*
S&W 686/686Plus (2 1/2")
S&W 696 (3")*
S&W 624/629 Lew Horton (3") *
Charter Undercover (2")
Charter Bulldog (2 1/2")
Ruger Speed Six (2 3/4")*
Ruger SP-101 (3")*
Taurus 617 (2")*
Taurus 445 (2")
Taurus 605 (2 1/4")
Taurus 85 (2")
Taurus 415 (2")
Colt Agent (2")*
Colt DS-II (2")*
Colt Cobra (2")*
Colt Trooper (2")

SP 101 or a Taurus 85
Both are very nice, Ruger weighs more and can handle 357 Mag if you wanted

Also a Colt Det. Spc is classic

Funshow SP101 3" 38, which my my wife claimed immediatley. This made/forced me to have to settle :D for a SP101 2 1/4 357. Life is rough sometimes. BTW... i've had lighter and more compact but they did not have the feel of confidence [+P/357]and shoot for pleasure ability of the Ruger.

Wow, the Colt Det Spl. That is a good one! I miss seeing those.

I have owned several S&W snubbies over the years. I now own a 442, and a 340PD.
I can't get over how light the 340 is, especially for a .357!
The 442 remains a favorite of mine due to its lightness as well.
Pictured is my 340PD.

Has anyone seen one of these (from S&W's website)

An S&W Model 60 and it's not a snubbie.
For some reason they put a 5" barrel on the damn thing! From the description they're marketing it as a target gun for people with small hands. I guess that makes sense  sorta.

The carry revolver I am having a torrid affair with is the Detective Special... and this lusty affair is certain to last a lifetime

There is a S&W which isn't nearly as drop-dead slutty as the Detective is, but I'm reaaally impressed with. Small and sleek, solid, all-steel, powerful .357 caliber, and with a superbly nice action. Personally, I wouldn't have anything but all-steel for this potent caliber. This would be one of the last guns I'd ever give up.

And for the light weight gun to slip into your pants or coat pocket, this one sure ain't sexy, but it's probably the most popular choice in a pocket revo there is and stoked with Speer's new 135 gr. +P Gold Dot ammo, it's a great little "equalizer":

This gun slips in and out of a pocket very easily and snag-free. And you can carry it in your hand inside your coat pocket ready to fire instantly right through the coat, if necessary. Internal hammer guarantees that the fabric of your clothing won't hang up the hammer movement. Nice!

:D

Lots out there and the used market is a gold mine.

Picked up all three of these used.

The M15 was cheap out the door and in the end cost me about $400 after the refinish and some work. Bobbed hammer and hard chrome finish make it a good pocket/carry piece.

The M36 cost me $300 used, but as NIB. Boot grips were a nice addition.

The M&P cost me $349, also as new.

Not many new revolvers off the shelf of this quality in the same price range. All three could easily have been picked up for far less with more wear.

A Detective Special would be great, but I don't see many locally. Last one I saw was going for well over $400.

Ruger makes a DAO bobbed hammer .38 special only SP101 that is a tad smaller then the regular SP101. Another solid choice.

I have a SW66 .357 that is too heavy for carry. Currently I'm carrying a Tarurs 85 Ultra-lite .38Spl. +p. It is black with pearl grips and gold accessories, and weighs only 17 oz's. :D Price should be around $300.00.

I sure like the looks of that Colt Detective, though. :)

I just picked up a taurus 85 ultra light/titanium 38 spcl. for i think $369.00 it weighs 13.4 ounces really light. I have it in a uncle mikes in the waistband holster and i cant even tell that its there not like having my 92 drop my drawers. Took it to the range immediatly and produced nice 3 inch groups at 25 feet not bad for a snubbie i guess.

Are you getting any (642) subliminal message from the responses (642) that you may be getting from everybody? I think you know (642) what you really want...its calling to you (642) and its hard to resist.

I've only recently become an owner of J-Frames (S&W 5-shot size) and I'm wondering why I never thought of buying one before now.

Here's the pair that are often closest to me.

jduo03.jpg

Top: S&W Model 042 (uncataloged) - reintroduction of the Model 42 a year before S&W offered the Model 642.
Bottom: S&W Model 649 Bodyguard - .357 Mag with shrouded hammer to permit SA & DA shooting.

Both are deployment platforms for Winchester 125gr Silvertips.

I recently traded my everyday 642 for an SP101 in .357. Twelve more ounces, but a lot more horsepower since my 642 was a no dash, not rated for +P ammo. The extra weight doesn't bother me on the belt, though it might not work so well as a pocket gun. It's definitly more fun to shoot at the range. Those light guns HURT.
