whats a good 22lr rifle

If you want a semi-auto, I have to throw my hat in the ring for the Marlin Model 60. It is accurate, reliable, and cheap. Mine has decimated my workplace's squirrel population. Some don't like the tube feed, but I've never found it to be an issue.

If you want a bolt-action, and you don't mind spending the extra cash, I would go with the CZ. They are beautiful rifles and the ones I have shot have been fantastic.

Just because no one has mentioned them, I'll toss out another suggestion - Remington Model 552 Speedmaster. They are not cheap (run about twice the price of a Ruger 10/22), but are beautiful and reliable semi-auto rimfires.

My father has one made in the mid-90s that is stupidly accurate for a stock gun.

I know Remington quality has dropped off in the last few years - not sure if this affects the 552 or not.

I've shot a number of 22s over the years, many of which I never even learned the make and models but my top 2 contenders are a marlin 60 and a ruger 10/22.

the 10/22 looks like an AR15 and has faster reloads, better reliability and lighter weight on it's side. (EDIT) mine has an AR15 conversion, not all 10/22s look like ARs)

the marlin model 60 had compactness and accuracy on its side. you had to clean it very often, use specific ammo types and carry a can of remoil with you but it was literally a tack driver. at 50-60 yards me and a buddy of mine used to shoot empty 22 casings off of the wood pile.

cant even come close to that with the 10/22 but it still holds minute of squirrel accuracy without issue.

There is a striking resemblance. I can hardly tell them apart...:D

I guess that is a strong point for the 10-22, if you like to play dress-up with your rifles, there are no better options.

You can make it look like just about anything, from a M1 carbine, to your AR, to a Tommy Gun, to a MG 42.

dont forget SKS and M14.

the ruger definitely has the aftermarket options.

Savage Mk II. Have it love it. Stupid accurate, cheap, decent quality, nice trigger.

Can't recommend it enough. Some may consider me a Fanboi.

I have a Marlin 60 and a 795 both of which i would highly reccomend.

The 795 is my appleseed gun, with tech-sights installed

My vote goes to the Browning BL-22. Accurate, light weight, and will feed anything from top LRs down to the almost silent CB caps for urban pest control. Perfect with a compact 2-7x scope.

What is your budget?

I didn't think I would be very good or be very into rimfire shooting, so I started with a Marlin 795 for $150ish.

I put a $90 Nikon Rimfire 4x32 on it and Harris bipod (BRM).

It shoots this at 50 meters:

Now I am shooting (going to shoot) a Savage 93R17TR in 17 HMR. I'd look into that before getting into 22LR.

To answer your question directly:

If price wasn't an issue, I'd take the Savage Mark II series first, CZs second, and Marlins last.

Not that the CZ and Marlins don't shoot well, but the Savages have the best trigger (if you get the accutrigger).

Hope that helps.

i am torn between these ;

CZ-USA 452FS Mannlicher 22 LR

or
RUGER 10/22 MANNLICHER INTERNATIONAL 22LR

or
MARLIN GLENFIELD/SCOPE Model 60

and then there is this beauty

Walther match rifle - .22lr

If you want a match rifle, the Walther seems like a good buy at that price. Unfortunately, there may be several other bidders, now that you've posted it here.

The CZ is a good rifle and so are many Ruger 10-22s, but I have a problem with Mannlicher stocks, due to accuracy problems with some models. They're great-looking, but sporter stocks are easier to get shooting accurately, IMHO.

Another vote for the Rem 552. As semi-autos go, they're a class act!

This thread is great, as are another few like it that I've been going over.

Semi vs. Bolt vs. Lever
Wood vs. Synthetic
Magazine vs. Tube
Standard vs. Heavy Barrel
Used vs. New
Scope mounting options
etc...

The last gunshow I went to, guys wanted $130 for well-used Marlin 60's that we're gonna take a couple days worth of work to get going. I just don't understand how a 5-owner 40yr old mass-produced .22 still commands that much money... and nobody willing to budge on Sunday afternoon from their prices.

I'm gonna end up buying new as soon as places start having them back in stock after the holidays. And Gunbroker isn't any help for new ones, they're no cheaper than any other place online. Even if you get a decent price on a used one, you're still out another $20 for your FFl... and $20 for a $130 gun gets you up to the same price you're gonna pay in a local store.

I'm thinking the cheapest heavy-barrel Savage MKII I can find will be a winner.

I have 5 .22 rifles and my favorite is my S&W 15-22. It is accurate and one heck of a lot of fun to shoot. Give it a look.
