Whatever the result, was the NRA an effective force ?

No way to avoid the truth

We in the NRA got our butts handed to us in this election. The Dems got the base (read: sheep) out, and we didn't. We lost Michigan and Pennsylvania. Look at the breakdown of the county-by-county vote. There are just too many sheep that have been assimilated into the collective "hives" of the major urban areas. Their only exposure to firearms are on TV, whether "entertainment" or Columine coverage. They have no direct personal experience with them, and are frightened and ignorant. They are not EVER going to be our allies.

If you look at how Michigan voted county by county, Detroit and Lansing and Flint are about the only areas that went for Gore. The rest of the state went for Bush. The problem is exactly what Hutch said it is. They got out the vote and we didn't. I would add to that fact that gunowners tend to think about their vote and don't just vote for the GOP, whereas the rank and file Democrats vote party ticket across the board. Besides, how many people get their information from the major networks? The reason it was so close is because the Internet is spreading the conservative veiwpoint, as is talk radio. Otherwise Gore would have won by a landslide. Keep on keepin' on folks. It took the liberals years to take the country over it will take some time to take it back.

P.S. Thanks for "inventing the Internet" Al. :) May we use it to save this nation.

Even I was impressed with an NRA add I heard.
Had the wife and husband discussing the Clinton/gore
Court stance on the second.
Wife said so we dont own any,Husband-yes but what if we wanted to like for self defense and if they can do this with the second...

It was well done makes you feel a bit better if youve sent
them money but it also tells you why the GOP is so weak
when it comes to our gunrights.
The repubilcan this add supported has a history of waffling.
It was aired in Ark heard it when I was driving through to the big tulsa. That I would add to your comment or question as to why is the GOP so weak ENOCHGALE.

BRETT BELLMOORE--- as usual I agree with you.Bush never
attacked Gore for any of his stances for more gun-control
that reason of course Bush was supporting too much more
for their to be a difference to the average often uninformed voter.
Guess that might be a insulting comment.
But who else seemed to feel the average voter was a bit
ill informed.
Thats why Im really happy about where most of my money went.

I, for one, would like to see the GOP (or both parties) simply say that we support the right of law abiding citizens to own firearms without undo government restrictions.

We could argue about felons, the mental ill, NICS but even the GOP won't run an ad that says the above clearly.

I would like to see a campaign by the national GOP that
says when your daughter is home alone at night or your older
father - they will have the option to protect themselves.

A single nurse will have the option when she works the late shift.
A young man work his second job in a convenience store.

But they won't. The GOP will never campaign on this issue even though I think it can be done in a noninflammatory way.
The Dems will quack about some once a year hunting doofus.

Bah!!!

PS - defending against tyranny is important but I'm into messages that have easy appeal. Pragmatic me.

The NRA DID SUCCEED in making RKBA an important issue in the election. I'm sure we all saw the interviews with Wayne, and the coverage of Heston's speeches. And the coverage of Michigan and PA.

I think the thing that hurt the NRA the most was the Dem's lie:

"Gore doesn't want to take your guns, but Bush wants to take your union"

That's at least one lie, maybe two. Not sure how GWB stands on Unions.

Part of the problem is that we have to tell the truth. They get to lie with the full cooperation of the media to legitimize and spread the lies.

Well, I was really surprised to find out that a couple of friends and neighbors joined the NRA after seeing the ads. And these guys don't even own guns! Let's face it, there are some gun owners who would turn in their guns without complaint just as easily as they would turn in their weedwackers. Even a lot of hunters would just use bows. They don't care. It's not issue #1 for them as it is for many of us. At least it won't be until the guns are gone for good.
HCI knows that. We just have to take the war one battle at a time.

Dick
