What would you pick?

I carry an issue Glock 23C on duty and am very happy with it. However, I carry my own Kahr MK9 or KelTec P32 off duty. I can't imagine trying to seriously carry a "compact", or larger, size firearm with any frequency off duty. Seems to me that few do after several years on the job.

That said, of the options given I would select the HK Compact first choice and Sig as the second choice.

Sig Sauer P-229 .40

It's a good gun that I could have confidence in until I could get the department to change the policy to allow a weapon that I'd really want.

when presented with a list of choices, i tend to look for the one that is not on the list. my preference would be the walther p-99 <in either 9mm or .40cal>. but that's me, thinking outside the box again.

Given...

...the requirements stated (duty and off-duty carry), I'd choose the P-229 with the USP 40c running a real close second.

This survey is just for my information. The reason that the Glock was not included was I knew that just about everyone would pick it. Nothing wrong with the Glock, just wanted to see what people would say about picking something else if they had to. I used our department's policy to an extenet. Our policy is :
Has to be .40 and double action.
Has to be:
Glock
Beretta
Smith & Wesson
H&K
Sig
So, with that said, this has been an interesting survey. I am going to give it until Tuesday morning and then I am going to post the results from this forum and others. In advance, I would like to thank everyone who has replied.

Sig, Sig, Sig

I own a Sig, Glock and USP in .40, so hopefully no brand bias here. Among the choices you offered (no glock), I'd pick the sig 229 in a landslide.

Accuracy: Sig is best, followed by Hk.
Sights: HK is good, but I prefer the Bar-Dot on the sig for quick acquisition.
Grips: Nearly everyone likes the shape of Sig grips. The gun points naturally. Beretta is next. Re HK, the compact isn't bad but the fullsize is much too blocky
Reliability: My Sig is the only semi-auto I've ever shot that has never had a malfunction. My HK 45 broke firing pins and the 40 suffered a cracked slide

But the big decider is the DA pull. Sig has the smoothest in the biz, if a bit long. The HK DA, well let's just say when I demonstrate "stacking" and creep to new shooters I pull out my USPs. Just awful DA. Really bad. You can actually see the hammer jump in stages... It's almost comical. Unlike recreational shooters who can cock the hammer, cops do have to make that first DA shot.

HK offers cocked and locked carry, yes, but I doubt if many PDs allow it.

Sig P229. Accuracy & dependability. (I've never observed a Sig's finish to "chip" before).
USPs are also good, but I like steel for duty carry.

RESULTS

Here are the results of the survey:
Sig 229: 62
H&K USP (Compact): 40
H&K USP (Full Size): 26
Beretta 96: 11
S&W 4003 TSW: 1
I wold like to thank everyone who voted and took the time to explain their answers.

I would point out that of all the guns listed, including Glock, only the USP's were designed around .40. The others are all conversions from smaller calibers. Of the conversions, I like the Sig. Glock is best a 9mm pistol.

Whoa, we all missed something.

The Ohio State Patrol conducted a test of 19 models of handguns, 190 total, to the tune of 228,000 rounds.
The previous issue, a DAO Beretta, has sufered slide
locks during critical incidents. (covered this in ShotgunNews and Handguns) The single most reliable handguns were the SIG P 226 first followed by SIG P 229. Several handguns rated DNF or did not finish. Tactically, the pistol are all about the same, you can do with one what you can do with any other DAO .40. I realize nuances of design appeal to some, but the SIG was rated top on reliabilibty and handling. 228,000 rounds. Better than the Glock, h and K or s and w and better than an improved Beretta.
It would be foolish to argue with that record. While I am a believer in the 1911, for issue to troops the SIG looks good. they could not say they were shortchanged.

if you are leo the osp has copies of the report which is pretty interesting. I belive the article I wrote was in last year's firearms for law enforcement at Petersens/emap and can't remember which issue of shotgun news.
take care

Hate to disagree.... but, the 229 was designed for the .40

I would like you to tell me where you heard that.

The SIG Sauer P229 .40S&W was the first .40S&W caliber pistol to be designed from the begining to chamber the .40S&W cartridge. The .40S&W cartridge is the reason that there is a P229. SIGArms could've brought a .40S&W to market a year and a half sooner if they had just swapped barrels, ejectors and recoil springs in the P228 or P226.

#1...SigSauer P229. Good ergonomics (for me anyway), compact and all-around nice.

2. USP 40c. Feel kind of funny to me, but very good otherwise.
3. USP 40. A bit big if you want to conceal it.
4. S&W. Not that familar with it, supposedly the TSW pistols are excellent.

and lastly, the Beretta.

If Glocks were included I'd probably go with a Glock 23 as #1 based on personal preference. It is just a nice combination of size, light weight & firepower. I'd feel comfortable personally with the Sig, Glock or USP... they are all very close IMHO. I'm not familiar with the S&W, so it might rank higher if I got to play with one. The Beretta will under all conditions remain dead last in my book. Just personal experience; the ergonomics totally suck for me and 3 out of 4 I was issued in the Army flat-out sucked functionally. :barf:

rkc,

Not discounting anything you said, but there are other agencies who have tested the guns you mentioned and came to different conclusions.

DEA authorizes USPc for its agents as does the Border Patrol. I have to believe the did some serious testing as well.

I read an article on the Border Patrol's selection process when they selected the Beretta. They did some serious testing and determined that the Beretta was far more reliable than any of the other entrants (they didn't list the other firearms for obvious reasons, but I have to believe SIG had at least one entrant). I expect they put the H&K through the same testing process.

I'm not saying you're wrong or that there is anything wrong with SIGs (I'm thinking of buying a new 220ST), just that different tests have come to different conclusions for whatever reason. I honestly would take any of the hundguns listed in the initial post (except S&W) and feel very good about it.
