What would you have done.....AKA Bluffing

Certainly each individual in each individual circumstance must weigh and decide whether or not to simply slam the door shut. But there are some things to keep in mind aside from the particular door in question, one's own physical abilities and how a potential invader is evaluated.

Should you choose to slam the door in the face of what is viewed as a likely aggressive antagonist then the action should be abrupt and with all possible force. When initated by the defender he or she has the advantage of at least a measure of surprize (picking the exact second), initial speed and momentum of force.

If one believes the invader might attempt a rush it is perhaps an error to allow them to do so - when they will then in turn pick the moment and gain advantage of momentum etc. Once they have but a mere foot in the door, literally, you are now faced with a far more serious problem; since you can not close it, and you can not leave to retrieve what you are now wishing you had with you to start with. If they do have a weapon, now they have you tied up at close quarters. If you break, they are inside and even if they do not shoot, stab or otherwise, they are in control of the fight and you are scrambling for your life.

In your particular situation, had a struggle at the door ensued after an attempt to slam the door failed, there was still the possibility of your wife getting your pistol or another weapon and bringing it to the fight for you.
