What Would You Do?

$500 dollar budget..hmmm..

Get you a Glock 17, you can find a very nice used one for $350. That leaves $150 left...Then save 50 bucks more and get a Ciener .22 conversion kit for it so you can practice with .22's all you want.

Shoot the .22's until you are proficient and then move up to the 9mm. The good thing is that you won't have to transition to a new weapons system, as you would with a buckmark or Ruger .22. You will already be familiar with the feel and handling characteristics of your G17. All you are doing is using a different mag and top half.

The good thing about the G17 is that high cap mags are still readily obtainable. You can consider buying one...even at $100 bucks a pop a lifetime investment as Glock will replace defective high caps with new ones. (unless you live somewhere they are restricted from sending you a new one.)

Yep. I agree with Redlg. go with the Glock 17 and get a .22 cal conversion kit. Can't beat the Glock for reliability and it is the easiest to clean and care for. Very simple to field strip. Beretta is also a good firearm but a requires a little more effort and time to keep clean and must be lubricated more carefully. For a first gun it is really tough to beat Glock. Have fun.

Without wading through the responses in this thread, I would ask you what's the intended use for the gun? None is really small framed, so I'm thinking you're not buying for CC. Of those you mentioned, I would go with the G17. I bought a used one recently, and I found it very comfortable to shoot. It's even comfortable to carry if needed.

Of the others, I have shot only the Beretta. Nice shooter, especially with the rubber grips.

Glock 17. The guns you suggested are not all completely comparable to one another, but for reliability and shootability, Glocks tend to do very well. My only concern would be on having a safety, but those who train with and regularly shoot Glocks do not consider a safety necessary. I think the key there is to train with and use the gun regularly.

Now i love all the good info you get here, but you need to think that the only one here who will be useing this gun is you, so if you really like the Walther P99 get it.
Now i do have a Walther P99 and love it, just remember to get a 100% German model;)

You ALMOST got good advice from Redlg155.

Get the Glock - you can't go wrong there. When you pull the trigger, it shoots. Nuff said.

Get a .22 conversion kit for practice, BUT DON'T GET THE CIENER
Get the Advantage Arms fit. It costs a little more, but is WELL worth it.

Go to Glock Talk and run a search on "Advantage Arms" or "AACK."(Advantage Arms Conversion Kit). You will find a multitude of people who love the the AACK, and another multitude who HATE their Cieners.

BTW, I also own the Beretta 92FS. Excellent pistol, and very reliable. However, mine has been in its box ever since I bought my first Glock. Eight Glocks later, the Beretta still stays in its box.

Stay safe,

Absolutely the best advice you could take. For your $500 you can purchase a high quality target .22 (Ruger and Browning both make good ones) and probably pick up a good, used DA .357 mag. if you shop wisely and look for a bargain in the used case. If you already have a long gun continue using it for coyote hunting for a while. Until you polish your handgun shooting sufficiently you aren't going to perforate many coyotes with one.
