What to carry on a road trip when you can't carry

True story from a kansas state highway patrol officer:

I made a traffic stop on an elderly lady the other day for speeding on u.s. 166 eastbound at mile marker 73 just east of sedan, ks.

I asked for her driver's license, registration, and proof of
insurance. The lady took out the required information and handed it to me.

In with the cards i was somewhat surprised (due to her advanced age) to see she had a conceal carry permit. I looked at her and ask if she had a weapon in her possession at this time.

She responded that she indeed had a .45 automatic in her glove box. Something---body language, or the way she said it---made me want to ask if she had any other firearms.

She did admit to also having a 9mm glock in her center console.

Now i had to ask one more time if that was all. She responded once again that she did have just one more, a .38 special in her purse.

I then asked her what was she so afraid of.

She looked me right in the eye and said, "not a damn thing!"

My number one would be the big Maglite. I have two that take three D batteries, those things are brutal. My second would be the German enchrenching tool. I have one of those and they are nasty too. Swing it and you have a nice hatchet there. Check out dog sprays, those would probably work out pretty well if there are issues with the wasp spray, they are at least more believable....
I think I am kinda spoiled living in AZ where I can carry just about anything concealed just about anywhere (slight exaggeration).

Response to mr. One ounce load

My response to your response, regarding my choice of non-firearm equalizers: That is why i have lived in texas for the past 60 years & not the state of new york or new york city !!!

Besides that, i am blind in one eye, can no longer drive a vehicle, walk with my blackthorn stick & medically retired on full disability due to multiple mini-strokes. I have a state approved handicapped parking permit hanging on the rear view mirror.

I am dependent on my family & friends to drive me to wherever i might need to go. Police officers in texas don't hassle handicapped / disable citizens, who might take the steps necessary to protect themselves from the social zombies who prowl the streets looking for an easy victim. I never go anywhere unarmed---ooo-rah !!!!

What about a small fire extinguisher?
I've been sprayed with one and almost choked to death as it sucked all the moisture our of the air.
The police in my country use them for dogs as well if they think there will be a do threat.

And fly spray and a lighter does make a nice flame thrower, I know lots of people who has done it without blowing themselves up.

I always have a Craftsman tool box with a 20 inch breaker bar and ball peen hammer along with all the other essential tools Id need if I broke down. If I had to they could make extremely good weapons and as far as I know there arent any laws against having tools to fix your broke down vehicle.:D

(Hint, hint)

Which do you figure is more likely...

A) That you'll need a firearm?

or

B) That you'll be stopped and frisked?

My father-in-law kept one of the little Marlins in his camper, just in case. Even took it to alaska, drivingt through Canada, and back. Although this was a couple decades ago. Not sure if you could leagally do it today.

I like the idea of the Marlin, when I travel I bring along a shotgun if possible. It is all locked up in the back of the truck but at least it is there.

My person:

Pocket knife
Peeper Spray (CS Inferno)
Surefire or HDS lights

Truck:

Large (10.5 oz) Cold Steel Inferno Peeper Spray
Large Mag Light

My only thoughts on this are to put your carry gun unloaded in the trunk while you are staying in NY... depending on what states you are driving through on that 1000 mile trip, you can probably carry in them.

I had a road trip about 2 years ago and that's exactly what I did...

but then you might have to end your trip by passing over to Vermont to do some shooting to make it perfectly legal.....

That was my 1st thought and I did look it up.

You need a permit to possess a handgun in NY state.

I'm not sure about a long gun. I owned long guns there when I was a kid. Maybe I could take my Mossburg shotgun. All my other long guns would be considered Assault Weapons there.

blume357, that only works if you don't stop in NY longer than necessary; you could conceivably stay overnight in a motel, so long as you didn't go out on the town that night or the following morning, but you can't visit.

Personally, I wouldn't even overnight with a gun in NY.

(Talking about the federal law that allows you to transit states when you are going from a starting point where you are legally good to go, to a destination where you are legally good to go, with a firearm.)

Note: the federal law not only requires you not to make any excessive stops en route to your legal destination, but also requires you to store the weapon in the vehicle in accordance with laws along the way.

So, in the glove box, loaded, in SC would be fine. Think it would need to be in a storage compartment away from the occupants, unloaded, cased, with ammo separate for NY and NJ, but am not sure - and in any case the OP needs to look it up for himself.

Yea, I think I'll avoid the firearms. I've made it my whole life without any legal complications. I'm not going to start now.

FWIW, I've always kept a tire iron under my seat. It's the handle to an old ratchet jack that was factory equipment on my old '85 4x4 Blazer. The jack is quicker to use and lifts a lot higher than any factory scissor jack so I've kept it with me through every car I've had since.

Much like the baseball bat, I'm sure a cop could give me a hard time for having it, but most cops don't hassle people about things like that unless the person looks like they're out looking for trouble.

Combine the tire iron with the 4" folding knife in my door panel (or the 4" folder that permanently resides in my back right pocket) and the machete in my trunk (with a pair of nunchuks next to it- don't ask), and often I don't feel the need to take a gun with me when I drive.
