What to buy? New 9mm semi-auto

I have never -- not ever heard of QC problems with the Elite Match series of pistols. And the guns above the Elite Match are quite popular in Euro competition circles.

The QC problems I have heard plenty of are from the "wonder" finish regular production guns and the 10mm chambered ones in particular. As for EAA customer service, I have also heard it's not great. I called them once for three more magazines and my experience was 100%. In 4,500+ rounds (all handloads, many were 125gr LRN), the gun has been a flawless tackdriver and pure pleasure to shoot and own.

Tanfoglio has been making guns for many decades and has armed the Israeli Mossad for years.

Bersa 9mm PRO a nice DA/SA double stack pistol.
Watch they come with 2 mags and have now for several years. 2nd mag under divider in box. Some low life dealers are removing and then will sell you a 2nd mag for around 40 bucks

I'm going to side with mrray13 and suggest you consider a Third Generation Smith, like the Model 5906. Though discontinued, they can still be found at affordable prices. There aren't many pistols ever made that are tougher or more reliable than these guns are.

I have a CZ75 P-01 and I consider it the last gun I would ever get rid off. I love it that much. Just a great great gun.

I'm starting to look for a new semi-auto pistol. Criteria: Fullsize, accurate, reliable, and 9mm. $500-$650 range. Although I respect the reliability of Glocks and other striker-fired pistols I don't like the trigger pull. I also prefer a metal frame and external hammer.

Why don't people read the OP before they respond. OP is looking for a Fullsize, accurate, reliable, and 9mm. $500-$650 range.

Look at the replies in this thread. People are suggesting Striker fire guns 9 HK VP9 and SIG P320), Compact guns (CZ75 P-01 &Stoeger Cougar) which do no meet the criteria. Then many of the other guns are over the price range of $650 tops. If I could get a NIB BHP for $650 I would buy every single one they have.

For the CZ P01 fans the trigger and design differ a fair amount. The P01 is based on the CZ 75 but it is not the same. When you say you love the trigger on the P01 it does not necessarily translate to its larger sibling. IMHO

A Stock CZ 75B, CZ75BD or Beretta 92FS would be my recommendations. I would have added the Sig P226 but it is over your price range. These are all reliable and IMHO what it will come down to is the ergos which are subjective. Go to a range rent and shoot them or ask around your local club/range and see if someone has one you can test drive.

Thanks for the input everyone,

I am going to see if I can try out a CZ-75 before I buy. (I do think I will absolutely love it when I do, and it is probably what I'll get). Even though I don't have any experience with CZ's new pistols, I absolutely cherish their rifles.

The CZ-75 is what I am most interested in. How is the trigger pull and accuracy? Reliability?

The trigger is pretty good in SA mode and not bad as for double-action. The trigger on mine has some "camming", i.e. when in SA mode and I pull the trigger, the hammer moves oh-so-slightly to the rear before dropping. As I understand it this can be fixed with some good aftermarket parts or by a competent gunsmith.

Other options are EAA Witness, Beretta 92, or 9mm 1911. How do some of those stack up?

I have an EAA Witness Stock (DA/SA) 10mm. Of all of my DA/SA guns, it has the best single-action trigger pull! Truly exceptional, but this gun generally costs 70% more than a basic CZ 75B. My stock is one of my favorite guns - nicely made; nicely finished, very accurate and controllable 10mm - I'm sure 9mm would be ever bit as good. I don't like the 92's - I have my reasons but won't start a forum-war over this gun. I also don't like 9mm 1911's - I just don't see the point of all that metal for a low-capacity 9mm.

The only polymer option that has my interest so far is the FNX. It has an external hammer and single action trigger pull. Whats it like?

You might want to check out the Grand Power K100 if you are considering DA/SA hammer fired Poly.

The Stoeger Cougar is in no way a compact gun. You must be completely unfamiliar with it.

As for the VP9 and the P320, yes the OP did say he preferred a metal frame pistol but he seemed to voice an objection to the Glock trigger. I don't blame him. I don't like the Glock triggers either. Furthermore, he did not rule out consideration of a polymer frame gun since he expressed an interest in the FNH FNX.

I was merely pointing out that there are full-sized options in polymer frame striker guns that have stock triggers vastly better than the Glock.

I spent $498.xx out the door for mine and I am very pleased. It is a RIA full size 1911 tactical in 9mm. It's tight, accurate and has been totally reliable. What more could one ask for?

The ones I have that meet that criteria are the CZ 75 SA, Citadel 1911 9mm, and I guess the CZ P-07. The P-07 may not be an actual full size, but it's not very compact either. For range shooting, hands down I do best with the Citadel 1911. It seems to point the best and I usually shoot very tight groups with it, plus little recoil. Only downside is the capacity. The CZ 75 SA has a great trigger and I like the feel of it more. It's a fairly new purchase, so I think I just need a little more range time with it. I put some VZ frag grips on it (worth every penny) and it feels nearly as slim as my 1911, but holds twice as many.

The P-07 has a really nice trigger as well. The Omega trigger feels nice in SA and DA. It does have a long reset, but CGW has the parts to help shorten that quite a bit I hear. They make the CZ 75 B with the Omega trigger, and at least on Budsgunshop it is quite a bit cheaper than the other 75 models.

you do not have to get the "elite match" to get a nice acuurate and reliable Witness, the regular ones shoot great as well, and still have adjustable sights.

The SAR's are really nice as well, but with an alloy frame so lighter, they have much less scratch resistance than a steel frame. ST10 is sweet, heavier trigger in DA though. I actually prefer the cheaper Sar B6, steel frame not the B6(P), but it is very hard to find anymore. The K2 steel frame is even better, but I don't think anything but the K2(P) was offered in 9mm, as the K2 steel only comes in .45 as far as I can tell. But the K2 and K2P re perfect CZ75 clones.

canik Tri-Star are just as nice as shooters, but the fit and finish is behind the EAA's.

It's not that all of those aren't decent, serviceable, usable and lovable handguns. It's more that the Elite Match is BEYOND those handguns in trigger, accuracy and capability. If you haven't had a chance to handle and shoot the Elite Match, it's very much like the difference between a box fresh plain CZ-75 and a CZ-75 with $300 worth of CGW parts installed correctly.

The difference is night and day.

I also prefer a metal frame and external hammer.

They're older, but NIB & Near-new examples are out there and fairly plentiful...
S&W 3rd Gen pistols...like the 5906, 3913, etc...
Fit all your categories and a few you haven't thought of yet ;)

I have owned a CZ 75B for over two years and I rate it a great pistol. I see you own a Browning BDM. I have owned three and still have two (one is still NIB). The BDM has been my main carry piece from when they first came out. Outstanding pistols!! Best of luck with your new purchase, you will like it.

I'm a little late but have to chime in. I like my S&W Model 39-2. It meets all of the Op's requirements. All metal frame and slide. Extremely reliable, so reliable it was the Police preferred weapon for years. Very accurate as well. Weight is around 28-30 ounces so recoil is nil. It does have an exposed hammer, decocker/safety and just feels right in the hand. It's small enough to EDC but not a pocket pistol! Ps - it was made in a time when Americans made the best and were proud of what they made. It was the first DO pistol made in America. Later versions are the 5906, etc.

The CZ75 is one sweet pistol, throw some trigger parts from CGW on it and you will likely be spoiled.
I also have a FNX, again a sweet pistol and probably one of the most underrated guns out there. Since you are at least looking at the FNX have you looked at the CZ P09. Full size, ploy frame, 19 rounds of 9mm and very accurate and pleasant to shoot and CGW makes trigger parts for it as well. You can find those for around 440.

Never shot a Canik or Tri-star but have handled several, seem like high quality high value pistol based of the Cz75 design.
