What tactical 22 to buy?

Archangel Nomad for 10/22

Get the Archangel Nomad kit for the 10/22 it looks pretty sweet and can be found cheap on amazon (around $140). It looks like the H&K G36. Plus it has Magazines w/ sleeves that simulate real G36 mags, so no goofy little mag sticking out the bottom.

I'm still trying to come up with a situation that a rimfire 22 would be used.

When zombie coke cans come after you, or when there's a sheet of paper threatening your life at 50-100 yards.

:)

In all seriousness, my wife had an interesting observation one day when we were talking about caliber preference. She said the following:

"I suppose it doesn't matter what caliber you choose because if the bullet hits someone, it's gonna hurt like hell and make them pause. Besides, there's a lot to be said for the well-placed shot."

A wise woman, indeed...

If you have a ar just order a 22lr conversion kit for it saves alot of money in the long run. Once you start putting alot of cash into the 10/22 you will end up spending about the same. Im a fan of the 10/22 if your wanting to pick a stand alone 22lr though.

Not sure if I ever heard of a tactical .22 before. LOL Guess I had one for decades and didn't even know it!

We've all had some odd rules to live with -- our friends in Canada are correcting some of theirs too!

got my Remington 597 with a 25 round mag and a 1x, 5 mil, red dot on it.:D 25 rounds of .22lr in the chest would ruin anyone's day.

That's not necessarily true. You can buy a used 10/22 cheap. A decent .22 upper for a AR starts at around $400. If you want to actually build a rifle from that (instead of breaking down a big AR so you can put the .22 upper on it), a lower will cost you at least another $200. Let's also not forget to mention sights and optics. It's a sickness, really.

Your options (in no particular order):

0) Get a Ruger 10/22 and tacticalize it. There is a HUGE aftermarket for these rifles, and you can build yourself a rifle that fits your own unique tastes and/or mission (the base 10/22 platform is a mature and reliable product). RimfireCentral forums even has a section dedicated to the Tactical 10/22. LOTS of experience and good info there.

1) Get a purpose-built AR-platform rifle, such as the S&W M&P15-22 or the Colt Umarex. These rifles have polymer plastic receivers and hand guards, and while they can accept a limited number of big AR parts, they will never be anything other than a .22 rifle. Accuracy and reliability still hit or miss.

2) If you already own an AR-15, get a dedicated .22LR upper that can replace your centerfire upper. These seem to be pretty pricey, but the benefit is that you can use milspec AR-15 parts for everything except the BCG.

3) Buy a complete AR-15 purpose-built as a .22LR rifle. This is probably the most expensive way to go.

I have a M&P15-22 because I wanted a semi-auto rifle and was enamored with the AR platform (I also own two AR-15s). If I had it to do over again, I'd probably get a 10/22, and not necessarily tacticalize it, but would definitely spend some time/money making it as accurate and reliable as possible.

Rustle in the Bushes, if you already have an AR type rifle, i would highly recommend this upper by Tactical Solutions (TacSol):

Tactical 22

G.S.G. (German Sport Gun) GSG-5PK American Tactical Imports .22

MP5 Clone, Heavy, but kind of cool ....I have one for sale with options,Bummer your in Canada.:(...BB34

For me the
concept of tactical 22 make sense. Not everybody can handle a high powered rifle, or not everybody can be so lucky to live in a place where rifle can be possessed easily.
A reliable 22 carbine can deliver quicks followed shots that will make anybody to think about what he is doing....
Take a look at gunblast.com for suggestions. Personally, I own a S&W mp15 22 lr and a ruger 10/22 tactical (it's on ruger's catalog and tested on gunblast.com). Both mounted with eotech. The ruger 10/22 is by far much more accurate and reliable...
Concerning a 22 as tactical tool, ask the Russian troops how many lost they suffered in tchetchenie caused by snipers using 22 lr... Or take a look at israelian troops shooting at Hamas leaders with scoped rugers 10/22...
Freud said it... It's not about size...

Since you're in Canada just get a 10/22 and trick it out however you want. If you were in the good ole USA I'd say spend the money and get an AR with a .22lr conversion kit.

Basically you'd get an AR in .223/5.56 then spend another couple hundred bucks getting the drop in conversion kit to make it shoot .22lr.

Suddenly bam you've got two rifles in one!

You could go to Wal-Mart and pick up an AR for around $600 then order the conversion kit for another couple hundred. Mags are around $20-$30 each depending on the kit you ordered.

I'd rather spend a bit of money and get the functionality of having a real AR rifle with the fun and economy of having a .22lr drop-in kit.
