What should I get?

Buy 'two' Ruger Single Action .45 Colts for the ~$800. Much more fun than the ugly bottom feeders. Just can't go wrong. Next thing you know you'll be starting a 'collection' :) .

Well gee, the guy comes here and says he has $800 and prefers either 9mm or .45... and that's it!

And then you poke your finger in #18indycolts's eye for giving a simple answer!

C'mon! How can anyone give any sort of reasonable answer to the question when we have almost ZERO information about what they guy wants to do with the gun, whether he wants a semi-auto or revolver or anything that might give us a clue about helping him? If he had posted it in the revolver or semi-auto forum, even that might have helped.

Personally, I think he deserves the answer he got! Nyah!

+1 to what Tamara said...and another +1 to getting a 1911. For that budget you can pick up a new Colt Series 80 or find a LNIB Combat Commander or Dan Wesson CBOB.

Okay I am just looking for ideas on my next handgun, my limit is 800.00. What should I get? I know this is a very broad topic, but I like most all handguns in 9mm/.45 calibers. Does anyone know what gun would be money well spent? Thanks for your input...
Sorry, gun_king. Not enough information.

What guns do you have now? No point in us suggesting something identical to one you already have.
What sort of shooting task do you have in mind for your new gun?
Do you reload?
What State (and City if applicable) do you live in? California would have different parameters than Texas, for example.
And something about your personal tastes as well. (Your stable of other guns would be a clue, but anything illuminating would be helpful.)
If you are intending this for carrying, your body type would be helpful as well.

Asking other folks to pick a gun for you is kind of like asking strangers to pick out a spouse for you. Help us help you. Don't leave us blind here.
Lost Sheep.

Since the only parameter you've given us is the price, and that it must be a handgun in 9mm or 45, I'll tell you what I would spend my $800 on and why.

High Power 9mm

Most popular handgun worldwide, parts available in Zaire or Argentina. It's been used by 63 different countries. It was the first "double stack high capacity" handgun, IIRC. It shoots better than most shooters and seems to fit most people's hands better than even the 1911. The 9mm is more commonly available worldwide too.

When comparing a 1911 to a High Power I find that the 1911 looks like a "workhorse" while the High Power looks like a "race horse". When you look at the inside of the gun you see an encapsulated recoil spring and guide rod. Also, there is no link pin to come loose, disassembly is a breeze and there's no blasted Barrel Bushing, which has been cause for frustration and inaccuracy since it's creation.

To me the High Power is the final evolution to all of John Browning's work. It's been said, "When John Browning created the 1911 he hit a Home Run. When he created the High Power he hit a Grand Slam."

OK, that's how I'd spend $800 if it were me. BTW, I just bought another High Power for that amount two weeks ago. :D Don't get me wrong, I like the 1911, but I've come to love the High Power. It really is a superior weapon platform.

Biker, what flavor HP you get this time?

Wow, I know I'm new here, but I agree already with Tamara. I understand #18indycolt's little joke, but some information underneath would have helped. Funny AND informational, it works every time.

Rent and shoot, then rent and shoot, and make notes about everything you shoot.

Have you tried an XD lately?
