What should I get?

Okay I am just looking for ideas on my next handgun, my limit is 800.00. What should I get? I know this is a very broad topic, but I like most all handguns in 9mm/.45 calibers. Does anyone know what gun would be money well spent? Thanks for your input... :D

Buy what feels the best and you are comfortable shooting. The worst gun is the one that you can't/don't like to shoot. The best gun is the one you like to shoot, are comfortable shooting with, and are accurate with.

Try out many before you buy.

Don't buy what others tell you to buy.

Really, I was thinking about that, but I thought they were more expensive then 800?

There are several quality 1911s that can be had new for around $700-$800, including any number of Springfield "Loaded" models and the SW1911, all of which are excellent.
The Taurus PT1911 can be had for around $550-$600 and serves as a functional "entry-level" 1911, but for not much more you could step up to something truly nice.
Dan Wesson and SIG 1911s are stellar products, but hover closer to the $900 mark (and up, depending on model). I myself own a DW CBOB .45 that is built to an amazing standard.
Rock Island Armory makes a competent basic 1911 for around $400 if you just want to try the platform or want a mil-spec configuration on the cheap, but these tend not to feed anything but 230gr ball reliably and are, as you'd expect, built to a lower standard.
Finally, I'd stay away from Kimber, their QC is such a crapshoot right now I wouldn't even risk it.

That said, if I had $800 burning a hole in my pocket, I'd pick up a CPO SIG P220, P226, or P239 to complement my P229 or a Beretta 92 variant and spend the rest on ammo/holsters/magazines. But that's just me.

Explore the market a little bit and see what YOU like, then buy that. Don't worry if half the board tells you to get a 1911.

What a thought-provoking and well-reasoned post. I love the way you carefully compared and contrasted the salient features of both and then wrapped everything up concisely. I was especially charmed by the display of scintillating wit in the denouement of your essay.

I appreciate this valuable contribution to the ever-growing database of knowledge that is TFL!

4 Hi Points. Carry two on each side, fire them dry with both hands, toss them and grab the other two. Well I guess the 4 holsters will add enough to put it over 800 maybe? You could fashion belt hooks from coathangers and attach them to the philips screws that hold the things together.

you don't want a 1911. they are more addictive than caffeine, heroine, and nicotine combined! I have two and I had to stop myself from buy a third the other day. I ended up buying a glock 26 that I actually needed(well maybe not NEEDED but ya know...)

glocks are highly addictive too...

guns in general are addictive. take that $800 and buy yer wife something nice and go find something constructive to do:D

My .02

Looks for the deals, brand new Taurus 92, lasermax internal, Houge grips, Bianca leather holster and you still have about 80 to spend on ammo.

Gun king, take your time and make the best choice. When I'm selecting a handgun I research in an effort to get as much feed back as possible. You can get a lot of good feed back from this site. Go to a gun store/shop pick up one or more that you're interested in to see if it fits your hands, if you like the weight, balance etc. If you can get some range time with the one/ones you favor it would be good too. Once you decide on "the one" try to find out its history i.e. maintenance/durability. Have fun!
