So I got a S&W Model 66 .357mag. What next? I want semi auto. Have about $500 to spend. Prefer full size handgun in 9mm, .40, or .45ACP. OPEN TO ANY SUGGESTIONS? What would YOU get and why? I kinda like S&W 5906 or S&W M&P at the moment. Just really torn on what I should get. Have some experience with handguns and do know my stuff but don't own one. Now, let the debates begin...;)

Get what you think floats your boat. :)

You can (and likely will :)) change your mind later and get something else if the boat isnt what you thought.

Personally, Id go with something in 9mm. Its the cheapest, so you get to shoot more.

Steel gun - 1911, Probably Rock Island in the $500 range.
Polymer gun - Glock 19 (17 if you want a little larger gun).

Two very iconic guns in their own right, with the 1911 being the most iconic. I own both.

Can't go wrong with a 5906, but you should buy sooner than later, they're only going to go up in price.

Auto Ordnance makes a pretty decent bare bones 1911 since the Kahr takeover. Under $500 and made in the US of A.

What's it for?

Glock 19 is usually a "good enough" answer. Especially if you like to tinker. They're wonderful for tinkering.

9mm is so much more affordable to shoot, it is a no brainer.

For your budget, you'd be hard pressed to have to settle for a junky 9mm. There are a lot of options out there at and under the $500 mark. Cz P-07, Sig SP2022, Glock 19/17, come to mind immediately. For a bit more, you can get into the PPQ or the VP-9.

I'd highly recommend going to a range that has a wide variety of rentals to try out, and taking a close look at those listed above.

^^^^^^

What he said.

Go to a range that rents guns and shoot as many as you can in your price range.

Glock, XD, S&W, Ruger, Sig, HK, CZ....

All good. But you're the only one that will be able to figure out what suites you best.

Glock 19
CZ 75
Hipower clone

Oddball? Are any of the larger Kahr pistols available for $500? I know the CW series is and they probably aren't a good choice if not specifically for CCW, but I like their larger pistols also.

I see M&P range and carry kits for around $525 often. 3 mags, a holster and mag pouch... And a Uplula loader.

I see the standard package M&P for $500 and less on sale.

The recent M&Ps have had decent triggers on them.

But there are many nice pistols in the $500-550 range.

Glock
CZ
XD
P320

Just to name a few.

SAR K2 .45. Just got one myself and am very impresses with the quality. 14+1 rounds of .45 goodness in a CZ type (slide in frame) pistol. Only caveat is that it is not for the small handed. Medium sized hands are no problem though. Prices are on the rise. I got my two tone for 500 a few weeks ago. The all black is still around that price a Bud's

Pretty gun too!

I take it back... The 5906 at my LGS just sold earlier today lol

Look for another one! Third Generation Smiths are some of the best built, most reliable pistols you can buy.

Some version of...

1911
CZ75
Browning High Power
Beretta 92

All are available as originals or "clones", in various calibers.

For a fun range gun the Beretta PX4 Storm in 9mm is great and cheap. If you are willing to save up a little bit more for a lot more gun then I would suggest a SIG P226 which is an amazing firearm for not only range but anything you throw at it.

There are some good recommendations here, though I'm partial to the CZ in steel. Since you already got a revolver, were you interested in sticking with a hammer-fired gun?

I've shot a P226 in both 9mm and .40cal Lopti. AMAZING GUN and of probably the 15ish different handguns I've shot by far my favorite! I would like one but I'm just keeping my options open as there are a lot more I have yet to explore.
