What Rifle for an Appleseed Shoot?

The new 25-round mags (Shooter's Ridge) work from Prone...IF you use a bipod.

a rifleman does not need a bipod. a 25 round mag will interfere with your ability to get comfortable with a sling

I used a Smith & Wesson AR15-22 at my last Appleseed. Didn't have any 10 round mags so used the regular 25 round mags that come with the rifle. I had no issues with shooting from prone & using a sling....and I'm not exactly a tall guy with long arms. Other people shooting different rifles with different mags could experience different results.

You're actually better off to have 4-10 rd mags, at some shoots they will do quick AQTs (if everybody has enough mags). And I've seen mags screw up, so an extra or two would be good. AND with a lot of high-cap mags, you will end up "mono-poding" on the mag, which is counter-productive to what we teach....

You don't need a bipod once you learn to use a sling correctly.

Thanks

A lot of good replies...keep 'em coming...

Right now it looks like the cost dynamic of a Mini 14 being cheaper is facetious, you still have to buy several expense magazines (Since we are planning to work a new rifle into the preparedness plans I need it to have 7 magazines).

I am looking at the Smith and Wesson MP AR platform, it is on sale at CDNN.

Bravo 2;
smoakingun has it right. Get yourselves semi auto .22 rimfire rifles with removable magazines. Fit them with aperture sights or low power scopes, however you feel.
Shoot one or two Appleseed events with those rifles, do your learning with them. the use of a centerfire rifle for beginners is not a good idea, muzzle blast, and recoil make it more difficult to focus on the basics of rifle shooting. It's the BASICS that you MUST learn first.
Then go and buy centerfire rifles. The information and knowledge that you gain in one or two Appleseed events with .22 rf rifles will help you immeasurably in your selection of a proper center fire rifle that will fit your needs. Ya need to learn to walk before you can run.
Not only that, but the RF rifles will be a great boon in the future when you want to go out & shoot but not cost a lot. AND remember you gotta teach your kids to shoot too.

We don't use bipods at Appleseed. It contradicts the purpose of a Rifleman's shooting abilities-as others have stated.
As also stated, a 25 round mag is unecessary, because it WILL interfere with your prone positions, and your sling techniques.
At Appleseed, we teach our shooters to reload, FAST, VERY FAST!
A Rifleman must be able to rip off 10 shots anywhere from 55-65 seconds with magazine changes, while maintaining 4 MOA accuracy and shifting NPOA between multiple targets.

Oh yeah...

Oh yeah, this is going to be FUN!

Im an ITT; the two most common rifles on the Appleseed line are the Ruger 10/22 and the Marlin 795. Optics help A LOT.

You will go through 400 rounds or so in the typical 2 day Appleseed; pricy with an AR.
For the same price as 400 rounds of .223, you could buy one of the .22s I mentioned (used 10/22 or NIB 795)
Good luck.

Boys and I built "Liberty Training Rifles" using 10/22's and a replacement M1 Carbine stock with aperature sights. Great project, work wonderful for the Appleseed events, get a lot of attention, and cost about $400 each.

Drop me a line if you would like some pictures.

You could get two Ruger 10/22's and put tech sights on them and have 4 factory mags probably for the cost of one mini-14.

What I found also helpful on the last one I went to was to use two different types of mags on the two parts of the AQT that has the magazine change on them. I used a Butler Creek 10 round steel lip for the first two shots and then a regular factory mag for the 2nd eight rounds. Keep you from getting the two mixed up.

You can always sell one or both of the 10/22s once you are no longer a cook and buy a mini-14 or AR.
