What revolvers are must have because they are so good?

For me it has been an unsolvable problem. Of the dozen or so revolvers that I currently have, in calibers from .22 through .44 mag and from makers named Charter Arms, Colt, Smith & Wesson, Taurus and Ruger it seems I have not yet found the perfect revolver. Maybe it was that 4" Python I foolishly let go of years ago. I don't kinow. So I guess for now I must keep accumulating... :o

However, I have noticed the last couple of years that the one that makes the most trips to the range is a 1968 S&W M 10-5 with a 5 inch barrel. It is the only 5" barrel revolver I have but there is just something about it that makes it a joy to shoot and I believe it is the balance of that 5" barrel. Or maybe it's just the romance of days gone by that an ol' pencil barrel evokes....

I'll throw in my list of revolvers I'd hate be without.

S&W 19
S&W 27
S&W M1917 (or preferably a civie target version thereof in blued steel, as I have a 625)
S&W 29 (with 8 3/8" bbl)

Please note that I like my S&W revolvers pinned & recessed

Also a good Ruger single action in 45 Colt

Papershotshells

There are so many desirable revolvers but the ones I've bought are the S&W Models 19 (6") and 66 (2.5") then recently a used Cimarron SAA clone, 45 Colt with a 4.75" barrel.

I would love to have more but I'm happy with those!

Nobody mentioned the big 10 inch....:D Ruger Super Black Hawk 10.5 44 mag

I like to hunt ,so for me, it takes priority over many of the others mentioned.

Ruger Single Action
Ruger Security Six
S&W J Frame

I'll toss my hat with most of this except.....

I have little time for traditional .SA revolvers in .22.lr. I could however go with the already mentioned K-22 but even then prefer my .22lr's in semi-autos like the Ruger MK series. THAT is the only time I prefer semi's.

On the J frame front I'm in active pursuit of a 3" - .38sp.

Looking at the OPs original criteria of 400 to 700

I think the best bang for the buck to reach that "Pythonesqe" quality (yes I made a new word) is a mid 60's Colt Officer Model Match.
The deep Colt Royal Blue, silky action an accuracy that took many National Titles..
For me that would be one of my first acquisitions before they are priced beyond the mentioned budget.

YMMV of course

Wood vs. rubber

I could not resist trying some old wood grip panels.
I like rubber finger grooves and the Hogue grip is very good, but I also like the looks of wood on this revolver. The wood is a little uneven and has some minor gaps whereas the Hogue has a better fit. I get a full grab with the Hogue but the wood looks better in the belt holster.

Viper99 -op - what guns do you currently have?

Sadly, I only own 1 revolver. A model 19-7 4"barrel and a bunch of pistols. In-patiently searching for for M27, 686 but after seeing the stainless 19 that Steelchickenshooter has, I want one. I thought the model 66 was the stainless version of the model 19.

I only recently caught the revolver fever.:o

Lots of them fit this bill for me. This was a pic I took this weekend deer hunting.

I will be getting a SS Blackhawk 4 5/8 barrel to go along with this soon. Both of course in 45 Colt to go with the others. :)

Well the revolvers I always heard I need while I was looking for a 357 was the ruger gp100 and s&w 686. But I didn't want the same thing as everyone else cause I'm young and picky :p so I looked a bit harder for unique versions of these guns and ended up with a blued Wiley clapp gp100 and a pro series 686 ssr. Both are great. I shoot the 686 slightly better and it has the smoothest trigger out of anything I've shot in my 1 short year of shooting but the gp100 actually feels better in my hand and I like the sights more.
The only other revolver I own is actually my first gun, a hi standard double nine. It didn't come with the 22mag cylinder but then, I didn't know about it when I bought it. Anyway, while this isn't what I'd consider a "must have cause it's so good", I'd say it's a must have cause I have yet to see another single action looking revolver that is actually a double action. It's pretty cool IMO.
