I think I will use the pistol that I carry all the time nowadays, the Glock 26.

Hey Mylhouse, if you are reading this, you can't tell that I LOVE my G26, can you. ;)

I agree 110% with Edmund Rowe.

I currently own a SA 1911, a BM AR15, and an 870. So thats my SHTF aresenal. I also have a Ruger P91, and an Ishipore that would work as well.

Keep the Ruger, don't let anybody make fun of it. I have the older boxy kind and it has been a good gun. Your P95 is much slimmer and smoother, compare it at the gunstore to some of the other ones you mentioned and you will see that there really isn't that much difference. And they are as reliable as anything else.

Follow Edmund's advice. Keep that Ruger, great gun, you already have it, and it's not that hard to conceal. 1K of 9mm can be had for a little over $100. Handguns are secondary to rifles, get a good rifle.

Stick to popular or military calibers such as: .223, 7.62X39, .308, 30-06.

Get a reliable rifle like: AR-15, SKS, AK-47, FAL, Garand, M1A, Steyr Scout, Rem 700, Winchester 70, Savage 110.

Practice, Practice, Practice.

PreserveFreedom,

I think it might be a bit difficult to find those little green cells that the BFG9000 uses though ;)

Besides, I don't think you can reload them.

Some other comments:

When I say, go for 100 perfect clicks a day, I mean where you aim, press the trigger, and when the sear breaks "CLICK" then the sights don't move off target. They don't dip, shudder, or otherwise stray from your aiming point. This is not easy and it's not natural. But you can learn to do it right shooting a few thousand rounds of ammo, or you can learn going click, click, click. One way is a lot cheaper. :D

Hope that helps.

Edmund

Glock 21 .45acp will do just fine. Also you guys who favor the 9mms, I am a LEO and we have to shoot animals that have been injured or sometimes dogs in self defense or that have bitten others. Not long ago one of my Officers had to shoot a large Pit Bull with his Glock 17 and two rounds of our Federal (9BPLE), 9mm Plus P Plus put the dog down very quickly.

"Train that brain between your ears, then your mental attitude and familiarity with your existing equipment is much more useful than getting the latest featured handgun on the cover of American Handgunner."

Great post, I agree with all that you say: practice with .22 until you are an ace, dry fire your primary until your sight picture and hold are perfect, practice all positions, right and left handed, (including reloading and clearing with your right hand in your pocket).

It's not the gun so much as the shooter's mental preparation 99% of the time. "Go with what you got, and shoot it a lot". I like .357, I like .45, I like any damn pistol that works every damn time. But the world's greatest race gun can't do it without a mentally prepared shooter behind it.

I'm new to TFL, hope I am getting this formatting right, "all mistakes are mine" etc.
BLOAT!
(Buy lots of ammo today!)
