What nigtmares frighten you?

Okay, seriously. In spite of being retired I still occasionally have the dream common among police officers in which I shoot the BG dead center but he refuses to go down.
I think this stems from police officers feeling they are inadiquately armed.

Hmmmm.... I hardly ever have nightmares, but then I seldom remember my dreams - frightening or otherwise.

The ones I do remember involve a large caliber handgun that I'm trying to use against a BG. Instead of BOOM, it makes a sound like a cap gun with no recoil and no effect on the BG.

Laughter upon the Freudian aspects of this will be frowned upon. :)

Once I dreamed that I was suddenly held up at gunpoint in a train station. It was so real--I woke up and my pulse was probably close to 200 bpm. Hope it never happens if I reacted that badly in a dream.

I'll also fire at people with no effect, or the trigger locks up, or I'm not holding a real weapon after all.

My most recurring dream, however, is that I'm in an elevator that starts a shaking, spinning free-fall down the shaft. I'm sure something Freudian is in that one somewhere...

The reoccurring dream I have is that I am at the gas station, and my infant son is asleep in his car seat so I leave him there to go pay. While paying a BG jumps in the truck, and drives off with my son, and I left the gun in the car. This terrifies me.
When I'm awake, I occasionally get nervous when he's been asleep for a while, and I haven't heard any noise. SIDS scares the poop out of me, but there isn't any rational fear of it as most cases are actually shaken baby syndrome.
Of course, you can throw in the occasional dream about all the teeth falling out, or being in public and realizing that I'm naked.
When I was in the Army my constant dream of being in formation, and realizing that I left my headgear (cover to you marines, and hat to everyone else) at home, and was hopelessly out of uniform. This actually happened once, because I came in my PT clothes, and after PT, I got dressed, and realized that I had no headgear, and I couldn't walk out to the parking lot to drive home and get it because I needed headgear to get there. The military gives you the craziest and most irrational fears. I bet there are a lot of veterans out there with similar nightmares. This doesn't count the veterans who have recurring nightmares stemming from PTSD or other trauma. Just the little wierd dreams of small insignificant matters.

THAT SCARED ME!!! DON'T joke about that!!!

Read all the above posts, see what frightens your fellow citizens. What makes their skin cold and clamy. IT IS NOT FIREARMS, it is the person weilding the firearm that is scary.

The public is being taught to fear firearms, when it is the boogey man (ie BG) that we should be taught to fear.

Children are taught not to talk to strangers. Not to take candy from strangers, not to go with strangers. BECAUSE THEY ARE THE BOOGEY MAN.

When you create a false sense of security ie more gun laws. Then you make people become complaicent.

One last example. The spouse who gets a protective order against the violent spouse. That protective order is not worth the paper it is printed on, if the violent spouse kills the other spouse. The protective order will not stop a bullet or a knife from destroying life.

It is the same with gun laws, they will not protect anyone from the boogey man. There are false in their attributes.

I wake up with a horrible hangover in vegas. I look down at my ring finger to see a wedding band. Then, I roll over in bed in the morning and see Janet Reno lying beside me with a happy look on her face!!!

Cobrun:

My advise is next time try chewing the arm that she is lying on off before she wakes up. This will give you a chance to sneek out... :)

I'll not discuss my worst nightmares...
But I will say that they will wake me with a shock and I'll not be able to sleep the rest of the day (I work nights). I can usually get 3 or 4 hours of sleep before one of these bad dreams visits.
I dont know what's bringing these on - but lately I have been very tired because of them.

The Death of a Loved One. Not so much how or why they died, but just the fact that they died.

Thankfully I don't have these very often. When I do, I rarely get back to sleep.

On the topic of self-defense in Dreams, my weapons (including my hands/fists) do not function properly, if at all.

I don't have nightmares...I suppose what could be in the same category are the occassional odd, disturbing dreams of worry:

A recurring theme is (adjusted for high school, college and grad school)...I forget where my locker is and its combo, I haven't been to class all semester, just found out the final is today and I have no idea what the subject is. Fact is I did quite well in all education related things, so I don't understand this dream. Oh well, I won't lose sleep over it :D

I had one, a few weeks after handling one, wherein I was in a self-defense situation, and had a Sigma 9mm subcompact! Usually, if I have a gun, it's not a nightmare! :)

The absolute worst nightmares I have are that I somehow accidently cause the death of someone I care about. Ussually it involves driving. I lost my best friend from childhood, and my highschool sweetheart to car accidents. Because of this, and the dreams, I drive like a "grandma". It's more important to get there alive, than to get there fast.

I've had a few dreams where I accidently shoot one of my hunting companions.

While both these dreams a very upsetting, I beleive they serve a purpose. A good dose of fear in the back of my mind keeps me from letting my guard down.

DC - I was talking with a shrink (on a personal basis, not professional :) ) and we were talking about those types of dreams. He said they are very common to anyone who has spent 16 or more years in school and they mean practically nothing. I have very similar dreams to yours. My main theme is that class has started and I know it but I can't seem find the classroom. A variation of that is that the classroom is all the way across the quad and I can never seem to make it there. Or I'm sitting in Physics 414 for the final and realize I haven't been to class all semester.

i do have this one where no matter how hard i pull the trigger the gun wont fire. i can feel it go back almost far enough with the last little bit before dropping the hammer is all thats left. it's like the grip is somehow too small and my finger wont rest on the trigger just right so i can't pull it back all of the way.
whats wierd is that some years later i got a kel-tec 9mm that does exactly that. unless i hold it in an odd way the trigger is right on the joint of my finger and can't be pulled all of the way back.

take care,

Mal H & DC - I have been out of school for 16 years (BEE) and still ocassionally have the "I've meant to drop a class and have not gone to it more than twice all semester and now it's finals and I have no idea where it is or what it is covering" nightmare - it still gets me.

I've been having this nightmare off and on for about 4 months. Surroundings & faces change, but the theme is always the same:

I go into a bank, airport, courthouse- almost any public business where they know my name and federally-mandated/accesable records are kept. As I start conversing with the clerk and carrying out my business, the clerk comes across with "Mr. Bear, my records here show from prior transactions that you have a CCW permit for your home state. Will you be checking a weapon (or 'do you have a weapon with you') this afternoon?"

At this point I think to myself 'That's an odd question' but I don't do anything but answer.
Airport: "Yes. Just let me unload it and pack it up. Here you go."
Bank,Courthouse: "Of course not. That's illegal."

Clerk: "Good. My manager just needs you to sign a couple of documents and you'll be on your way." and as I walk to the manager's desk, I am whisked away by heavily armed Feds. About this time I jolt awake, fearing all I have been taught about freedom and liberty are for null.
