I've been thinking about this a lot because I've caught the revolver bug, and I'm trying to narrow down my own choices for my next gun.
1. Definitely a 3-4" .357 is the way to go. That's the most versatile setup, and you'll always be glad to have one. They age extremely well.
2. I'd stick with Ruger or S&W, juzt because they hold their value a bit better than the others, and Colts are a bit overpriced.
3. A slim 5-shot like the Ruger SP-101 could also be used as a carry gun, but I feel like it's a bit too much of an in-betweener. It doesn't conceal as well as a snubbie, and it's not as nice to shoot as an L-frame.
That brings us back to the age-old question: 686, or GP-100. It's a bit trite to say it, but it's true nonetheless - you can't make a bad choice. The Smith's a bit more refined, the Ruger's a bit sturdier. You won't regret it either way. Like I said above, though - the Smith is a lot harder to find where I live.
