What military rifle to buy for my needs?

Looking at your requirements, I'd suggest an AK. You can get a decent AK with plenty of regular capacity magazines and a case of ammo for the money you quote. AKs are no match rifles, but they are cheap to feed, very reliable, inexpensive to accessorize, and most of all fun to shoot.

an AK is good to 400 meters (with scope), then the energy (kill power) drops below acceptable (my opinion). I personally wouldn't shoot mine at anything past 150, I'd use my FAL!:p

I partially agree with that statement Swatman. Why don't you come out to the next PA shoot and prove me wrong;) . I hear people say 300yds for the 7.62x39 guns but I've fired my Scoped SKS and seen several other Scoped Russian guns barely hit targets at 300yds. My Mini 14 can hit a 12inch piece of paper every time at 300yds. The round still has energy but hitting the target is the trick. "Dead" has been bring his SAR II rifle and that gun is by far the most versatile AK rifle I've seen. I'm sure you can hit targets at 300-500 if your good enough.

Swatman, if you can consistently hit targets at 300 yd or more with an AK, my hat's off to you. The only one I've shot is my SAR-1 and I like it, but if I know I'm shooting at 300-500 yds, I'm more confident with my M1 Garand (with peep sight) or '03 Springfield (with scope). Those two would also be good choices except for low capacity magazines (8 and 5), and the surplus 30-06 ammunition may be harder to find.

Would a scope help with longer range AK shooting? Anyone use the PSO 4x24 on a 7.62x39 AK? That looks like an interesting scope for a SAR-1, and the total is still close to brookstexas' $400 target.

Regards.

I know scoping my Russian Saiga rifle and my two SKS helped tighten my groups. I was extremely disappointed with my SKS when I tried to hit an 18in piece of paper at 300yds. I didn't put one hit on paper after about 50rds. Like I said before, My Mini 14 put every shot on paper at 300yds. The other people I've seen shoot russian rifles at 200yds were getting 12-18in groups. If somebody was behind a tree at 300yds you'd never hit them. After 200yds the bullets drop so much your bombing your targets. I have been told by my cousin that he witnessed an AK hit out at 300yds. But I haven't!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't doubt that you may have seen people having a hard time hitting a target at 300 meters with an AK. I am sure some can and some can't you however just made a Blanket statement that they were no good past 150 yards and I simply respectfully disagree with that statement.
That's not to say that there aren't better rifles for the job. Sure I would prefer my FN FAL if I had to hit a target at 300 or more meters. But, there is no reason why with practice, you shouldn't be able to hit a man size target at 300 yards with an AK

Who said an AK is no good past 150yds? I'm sure you could hit a 6ft target at 300yds. But like I said before, if somebody was behind a tree you'd have a hell of a time trying to take them out. An SAR II would do the trick. Not the SAR I IMHO.

We need to set up some Man size targets at the TFL shoot in Sept and settle the debate SwatMan. You have an FAL?????? You better come out!!!!!!!!!! I thought I was the Only person in Pennsylvania that had one.

With a 7.62x39 I really dont think it would matter if they were BEHIND a tree, wether it was accurate or not I haven't seen any bullet typ in that caliber that would punch through trees:p
Sorry, I couldn't resist.:D

Ok I disagree with that too. ;) I went shooting Paintball a few weeks ago for the first time and I got shot in the foot two times. I kept forgetting to pull my feet in. If the bad guys I was fighting had AK's they would have never gotten my piggy toes. WHAT I MEANT YOU SMART @$$:p ............ wise guy:p

Save your money and buy an M14, even if the mags cost $50. The .308 ammo isn`t as cheep as .223 or 7.62x39 but you will have a rifle you can depend on for most anything, at least out to 1000yds if you practice.:)

Who said an AK was no good past 150 yards?
Sleeping dog did.

SodaPop, swatman,

Yes, I said it. Actually, I said it was no good past 200 yards, but that's a nit. You guys have conviced me it's my bad shooting, poor eyesight, twitchy finger, lack of practice, that makes it tough to hit long range with a 7.62x39. The AK's blade rear sight and the short sight radius may be tough on these old eyes, too.

I'm heading back to the range for some serious practice.

If brookstexas' target price was $400, I think a Romanian AK is overall a good choice, maybe with some kind of optics - PSO scope or Kobra red dot thing.

Regards.

(but for longer range, I'm still gonna grab the Garand):)

LOL ok Soda POP I knew what you meant:p
Sleeping Dog I believe if you look back on the posts you actually said no good past 150.. Either way let me be clear here, I dont think that the AK is a very accurate weapon espacially next to FALs, AR's, etc.. But for what the orgional poster is looking for I think it should suit fine.. I do alot of my shooting at 100 and 200 yards..My local range doesn't go any further. There is another closeby that goes to 600 yards but haven't taken my AK there.
If you are looking to shoot 300 plus yards often ,I would say invest in a Fal otherwise an AK should serve you well

Ahem..... Swatman IF YOU WOULD COME OUT TO THE PA SHOOT IN SEPTEMBER YOU COULD SHOOT OUT TO 500yds!!!!!

I'll vote again for the SAR II. If the Democrats can vote twice in Presidential Elections I can vote twice on this thread:)
