What makes the sound when handling/Racking the slide

hey guys, I recently purchased a brand new Beretta 92FS. When handling the gun, it does not sound like it is made out of metal at all. It sounds more like plastic parts are hitting each other.

I went back to the gun shop and handled a exactly same gun but its a used trade in. It sounds extreme nice when racking the slide. It actually sounds like solid metal engaging each other. You know that sharp metallic sound that goes cling cling cling?

1. Which part of the pistol gives you that nice sharp metallic sound when racking the slide?

2. Do older guns that had gone through tons of round sound different/better compared to a brand new gun?

3.or is it just because manufacturers use different parts(Plastic/Aluminium) on newer gen pistol as opposed to solid steel metals on older guns, hence the sound difference?

I think what you may be hearing is the effect of breaking in.

Many of my pistols (and rifles) I purchased new and they defiantly work smoother after some break in.

The metal parts contacting each other smooth out a bit.

Anyone who can still hear well enough to notice this must be a new shooter. :)
A few thousands rounds from now and you will be saying things like "Eh, what?" like the rest of us.

If it makes a BANG sound when you fire it... you are all good. When semi autos are brand new, and everything is still tight, it will seem and sound different when handled. Maybe even a bit rough. Just shoot it. It will loosen up after a few hundren rounds

Sound ? What sound? With double hearing protection to save what little is left and constant ringing in my ears who can hear slide sounds?
Don't try to find fault in your new Beretta, just wear good hearing protecction (32 db or better) and shoot the beans out of the new pistol.

Oh golly, TFL strikes again. Try a 7.4 liter V8 timed 180* out detonating a cylinder load of gas three feet from your head. The echoes rolled about the neighborhood a few times, sounded like construction blasting. The exhaust was trashed afterwards. I can still tell what slide racking sounds like. Lightweights

2ndAmnt, an animated picture of the pistol's function might help you.

I was happy to read the OP's. Question. Remember a time when we all were fascinated with the simple sound of the action? The sense of WOW when the firearm is first picked up?
We all should be so lucky.

Now let's get back to whick Glock is best and why one caliber is much better than another.

Welcome ! 2ndAmnt. Wear hearing protection after you're done listening. :)

Ideally in my mind, the sound would be that of greased steel blocks sliding on one another with a precise tick as the sear catches. IOW, virtual silence.

You could probably find a digital device these days that would replicate the sound of a shotgun or M2HB heavy machine gun racking every time you work the action. ;) Whatever turns you on.

I'd also recommend a grip pressure switch that plays Ecstasy of Gold whenever you pick the gun up.

There are some plastic parts in Berettas these days.
So the different sound is not abnormal.
Sorry 'bout that, 2nd. Go shooting.

The things you hear are typically the barrel moving downward or backward or both as it unlocks... often from the underside of the slide. You also hear the rear of the slide hitting the hammer (cocking it) and you may hear the slide pushing over the top of the frame and hitting the disconnector as it does.

One thing that can add to or obscure what you hear is an empty magazine in the pistol.

"What makes the sound when handling/Racking the slide"

On TV or in the movies its the sound effects department. :D

Wow only a few hours and already so many replies. TFL is great lol

And yes dajowi, thats the sound Im talking about. The old trade in 92FS at the gun shop has it.

there is no plastic in a 92...

there is usually no plastic on plastic contact, even on hanguns with plastic frames, they still have metal guides that fit to the slide rails.

Shimpy, Mine distinctly say C-O-L-T as the hammer is drawn to full cock. I don't know what the Italian single actions say, pretty hard to get Uberti out of four clicks.

One new guns, its common to hear a bit of scraping until the gun breaks in. If it really bothers you, you could accelerate the process by racking the slide back and forth over and over. Eventually, it will smooth out and the noise wont be as loud, if not go away completely.

The 92 frame is aluminum?
You won't hear the same "clank" with steel against aluminum that you do with steel-on-steel.

In the 1st vid, the sound is the slide going forward

I cannot explain these sounds in more detail than the animation I provided, but why does one sound make you unhappy?
