What Makes for A Great Range Day?

A great day is taking a nervous newbie to the range,,,
Letting them fire a variety of handguns,,,
Then having them ask to go again.

A great day for myself,,,
It's just getting some leisurely trigger time in,,,
Usually with a single-shot rimfire rifle and a rimfire revolver.

Shooting at and hitting reactive targets is my joy.

A great day at the range is one where it's nice and rainy(family tradition) with my mom, sister, sister-in law, fiance, and niece are present.

Those are the best days. The range is usually empty, The range officer lets us control our own hots and colds, and we ALWAYS shoot better in the rain.

I'm still proud when I bring my converts to the range on a regular basis:D

Strangely enough, my best range days usually envolved just a old .22lr that my dad got in 1956 for his 6th birthday. Its a Revelations that to this day is still more accurate than my wifes bench rest 10/22.

It's the most fun whenever I shoot my old military guns. All different rifles from different nations. All different pieces of history. They're all very accurate and a blast to shoot.

Range Officer? We don't have any Range Officer at our club. We're self-policing.

The worst days on the range in FL were when it was nearly full and only had 15 minutes to shoot between whistles. Not a fun situation, especially when the guy a few benches over isn't watching his kid, who's trying to clear jams on his .22 by banging it on the bench. (At Daytona, all the benches are tied together by being attached to the roof supporting posts, so each shot, or other movement, shakes the crosshairs.)

Picher is right. Taking your grandson who tells you the range is "much nicer" than he expected, and who is able to get his rounds (rimfire and centerfire) into the 10 ring!

My youngest son,(15) took a nice doe this youth season with his brother's .270, and liked the experience well enogh to ask for his own rifle. Well Xmas morn came and he had a Savage 111,30-06 with a Burris C4 3-9x40 under the tree....were hoping to go to the range today and see if we can get it on paper at 50 yds, then if it's decent out to 100..,
I can tell you this, we're not sure who is more excited!!!!!

Hooligan,

Totally understand every time one of my girls says dad lets go to the range I can't get packed soon enough. My son who is the younger of the children is old hat on the range :)

My son shot his new rifle very well, and would have shot it more but we ran out of ammo, Im tickled he dug it man...

What is post #32 and #33?

Range Officer? We don't have any Range Officer at our club. We're self-policing.

I wish we had that option. In Pensacola FL there aren’t any truly public ranges within 150miles. There are ranges where anyone can shoot but you have to pay and you don’t have control over Hots and Colds. There are also massive restrictions on types of targets one can use. There are some clubs one can join but they are pretty far out and still have the restrictions on targets and such. Kind of annoying really. Been looking for alternatives but no dice so far.

I envy anyone with enough land to safely shoot or access to ranges with more freedom.

When the range is full of people from different races and you all joke that you should 'meet here if the zombies invade'.

Intense competitions using a .22 spinner.

Someone letting you try their 'rare' weapon.

Everyone being safe on a public range.

When done right, is this not a great past time and sport.

Each post I have read and could not agree with more. I get a kick out of it just reading your post.

The best day for me is when you find that one perfect load for your rifle.

Sometimes I wonder if I reload to shoot, or shoot to reload. For me, the chase for that elusive one hole group is what drives me and I love wringing every bit of accuracy I can out of rifle.

At almost 6' 200 lbs, Im thinkin recoil not a problem. Hopefully he will like this 3006.
Yes he's big for 15.

I was 200pounds 6'2 at 12 years old:D

but some people say that being big actually is a detriment ot handling recoil

tall thin guys flex with it more, us heavies stay more planted and the recoil is transfered to the shoulder

I almost cried at 12 years old when I got to fire a friend of the families 300winmag, probably a lousy stock and I shot it in a bench. I was used to the very softshoting 6,5x55
