What kind of finish?

This chart doesn't have Poly-T2 on it but there is a spec sheet that you can read on Robar's site with info on Poly-T2. But here is a handy chart from Robar:

The "stainless" finish on the lightweight j frames is matte silver, basically "paint".

No, it is not basically paint. It is an anodized finished that penetrates the surface. Yes it will wear, but it is a far cry from paint.

Stainless steel is not really a finish, it's homogeneous all the way through. But can still rust on the surface.

Robar etc. are all good finishes, but they are still a coating that can and will wear off and exposed the steel underneath. But very good for normal wear.

Other plus for stainless is that if you do decide to put NP3 or Poly-T2 on it - it's fairly simple, but to put those finishes on a blued gun Robar first has to take the existing finish off... and they usually charge for that.

Didn't know you could do that. Never knew a coating that worked well on stainless, but maybe I am behind the times.

Added: I just did some reading and I stand corrected. It appears you can use NP3 coatings on stainless steel. That's because it is an electrolysis type coating.

I am older than most here. Didn't think there was anything left for me to learn.:D

Just get a J-frame, and expect it to wear. It's a carry gun, it's going to wear.

As long as it shoot's and performs, that's most important.

Clean it, lube it regularly, and deal with the superficial wear, it's going to happen, so deal with it.

If you want a gun not to wear, don't carry it.:D

The stainless finish holds up alot better than the matte blue. My blue 442 looked like heck not long after I started ankle carrying it. The dings, dents and chips in the finish just add character to the gun!
I'd probably get a blue one again, since I much prefer the dark color for concealment purposes.

You must remember one important issue. Stainlesss steel is not a "finish". SS is the type of material that the weapon is made from. It is an alloy of steel and there is no "finish" that will wear off.
