what i've learned through my first year as a member of TFL

Yep, I was sad to recently learn that deer no longer will die if hit with anything smaller than a 7mm mag. They are evolving thicker skin it seems. Most expert's estimates say that within 15 years you'll need a . 416 Rigby to penetrate into the vitals of an average whitetail!
Not to mention that 20 years ago we would walk into the woods wearing jeans and flannel shirt, kill a couple of deer and go home... but nowadays you need $300 worth of Mega-Camo Ultimate Scent Killer clothing and charcoal underoos. :)

Did you guys hear the big news this morning? Apparently the powers that be have figured out how to resolve the impending budget crisis! They've been reading TFL & have decided to sell off all military light rifles & all 5.56 ammo. They're also cancelling all marksmanship training as well as every sniper school. Instead, they're going to issue every soldier, marine, sailor, & airman a savage mark II 22 lr! They've done the research & there has never been a confirmed case of a savage rifle hitting anything but the 'X' ring from any distance under any circumstances. Isn't this great?! Our boys will never again miss a shot!

Lol..man this thread is funny..and a .22 is that what u heard? Not what there telling me..I was told that the 17 hmr is way better but unfortunately more expensive that they had to switch to the mach 2 and that from now on all of our weapons and ammunition will be produced in china :)

What about the galactic difference between a 130 gr .277 bullet going 3000 fps and a 130 gr 308 bullet going 3100 fps?

One apparently is a great deer round, and the other bounces off deer.

Maybe that is why the experts say a 300 Win Mag is the minimum for 90 pound deer.

Cough cough...rim fire cough cough illegal to hunt deer with cough...sorry..nasty cold..but a. 22 can kill a deer grave yard dead..or so iv been told

I've learned that the internet can be a very tricky place to trod, indeed. "Separating the wheat from the chaff" is the perfect analogy.

Good thread Mdd. I would like to share a couple things I have learned on here. Like how I learned that the .30-30 is no longer acceptable for hunting deer due to it's inability to shoot flat past 100 yards. The open sights also produce unacceptable accuracy and groups better than 10" at 50 yards are impossible without williams apperature peep sights or a leupold or nikon scope. A carry sling is also no longer useable because you must use a shooting sling to steady your rifle or you will miss 99% of your shots. To use a shooting sling the goal is to help steady your rifle and this is achieved by wraping it around yourself, I have settled on the 2 times around left arm, once around the neck and up between the legs technique. I have learned that in order to succesfully take a deer you need a cartridge that fires a bullet with an acceptable ballistic coaficient. You can only determine this with a ballistics calculator program. The cartrdge needs to be efficient so anything other than the .260 remington is unacceptable. It needs to be fired from a rifle with a composite stock containing kevlar with a bipod attatched to the forearm, it must have a stainless action and free floated fluted barrel. You also have to use a leupold mil dot scope with target turrets mounted on a one piece picatiny rail. lol :)
In all truth once you cut through the obvious b.s. that is found on any online forum, there are a lot of knowledgable and helpful people on here which makes for a large base of good information.

Well said!

Hey, you can bash the .260 all you want but it really is a pretty cool little cartridge.

Too bad sarcasm is something deciphered from tone of voice. Obviously, your post is proof that I fail at internet sarcasm.

Okay, so you have to separate the OPINIONS from the valuable knowledge but overall I have gleaned a wealth of knowledge from my 9 months at this sight.

However, if a discussion about the color of the best farm machinery starts up like was attempted on page 1 of this thread.......... I will just have to pick up my internet marbles and leave.:D:D:D:D

Cowboy, I obviously can't read or I wouldn't have mentioned your join date :)

Seems like the parody of the whole thread is lost on some guys. Tighty whiteys a little too tight? This isn't a bash of the forum or any members of it. I thought the place could use a few laughs after the four page ninety two reply grump-fest of everybody telling everybody else their respective favorite caliber and cartridge is junk. I too have learned much from this forum. I am perfectly well aware that the chaff must be discarded. Throwing in the pictures of my combines just fit too well with the theme of the thread as a follow-up to the wheat/chaff advice.

Jake, your 260 is the most worthless cartridge ever invented. The resources used to make their ammunition would have been much better allocated into fishing lures and door knobs. But my 270 & 300 mag....now there's what you need.

:D:D:D

I'd love to write something funnier than this thread, but words fail me when I laugh so hard. Thanks for a great thread!

Young yuppie: "I've got a $50,000 car that I only drive on the weekends"

Old farmer: "Hell, son, I've got a $250,000 combine I only drive two weeks every year."

Besides, we all know that the best color for farm equipment is red. Green is only useful for painting on water towers. (ducking for cover).:D
