what i've learned through my first year as a member of TFL

I've been a member of tfl for a little over a year now & have learned a lot from reading right here in "the art of the rifle". I thought I might take a moment to reflect on a few of the things I've found humorous. Jgcoastie's 'i hate....' thread got me thinking so i'll try to convey those thoughts.

1. Rugers don't shoot straight. Ever. If they do hit their target, its akin to the blind squirrel finding an acorn.

2. Leupold is junk. Should have bought a nikon.

3. Nikon is junk. Should have bought a Leupold.

4. All calibers are worthless unless they're MY favorite caliber.

5. 223's are amazing with 1:9 twist or faster because they'll shoot 77 gr bullets.

6. 223's are garbage because they have such mediocre muzzle velocity.

7. Efficiency of a cartridge is the only thing that matters. Can't waste that extra 3 grains of powder on silly things like increased muzzle velocity.

8. Long actions are the devil.

9. A 7.5# rifle is a fine field gun. An 8.5# rifle will leave you gasping for air with no hope of making it to your hide.

10. A 243 is a wonderful caliber spawned from the infallible .308.

11. A 243 is nothing more than a woman or child's caliber.

12. There is no need for any further R&D in the firearms world. Now that we have the 260, we have reached the pinnacle.

13. Dead is dead. Unless I want your kind of dead. For that I have the wrong everything.

14. The 30-06 and all its progeny should be banned, confiscated, and destroyed. For explanation, reference #7 & #8.

And finally:

15. I love living in a country where we have so many firearms available that we can bicker nonstop about the utmost minutia of difference in them. Nowhere else in the world do people enjoy so much freedom that they sit around and openly debate brands, calibers, & and ammunition.
So everybody be safe while enjoying the liberties we have. Try to have a great time even though your rifle/caliber/scope combo will never be as good as that of the guy posting immediately below you :)

Oh phil.......phil phil phil. You just had to use that analogy didn't you. Sit tight and I'll be right back with my wheat/chaff separator.

here's a photo of last summer's harvest. You can't see much of me in the cab but that's my $302,000 wheat-from-chaff separator machine:D

Separating wheat from chaff is one of my favorite parts of my work!

Indeed it is me. It's hard work but it's a good life. Best is nobody thinks twice about it when I show up to work with two or three guns in my truck!

Well mdd ,my apologies, you certainly look like you already know how to sort the wheat from the chaff:D
In Australia, Ive shot on a few wheat properties. The pigs like to hide in the wheat & come harvest time there's a lot of fast & furious shooting to be had riding on a harvester. We usually harvest around early December in NSW, but due to unseasonal heavy summer rain, most of the wheat crop was lost last year. Not good news for the farmers, but should lead to a significant rise in the local feral pig population.

The farm work is exhausting just from the long hours. Wheat harvest will always be 100+ hours per week and its hard to stay focused as the days drag on. Soon as somebody loses focus something bad happens and bad gets expensive fast.
Admittedly though the cattle are much more physically demanding & can be very dangerous. I got kicked in the ribs last fall by a 1200 lb cow. I'm lucky it was a glancing blow but still broke three ribs.
But we're getting way off topic. I need to put up pictures of the ruger hawkeye tactical 243 I just got yesterday. Then you guys can ask me why a grown man would waste good money on the least best woman's/child's caliber and for god's sake why another ruger because you know it couldn't hit that combine if you torched one off from inside the cab. And a bushnell elite 4200 6-24x40 ao on top of it? Why didn't you just go out in the driveway and burn the $1100 you put into that rig because you'd have been better off with a dragged to hell and back $34 savage & a fifty cent busted tasco from the pawn shop!

8. Long actions are the devil.

That seems to be the current opinion.

I used the same deer rifle for over a decade and bought my ammo from a small local sporting goods store. 2 or 3 years ago I went into a huge mega gigantic sporting goods store to buy a box of .270s. I wandered around the ammo section for half an hour in amazement. It seems that just about every caliber is now being offered in some kind of short magnum. To me .243, .270, .308 and 30-06 always seemed to fit all needs for deer hunting.

I ask this question because I don't know - WHY so many new calibers and specifically whay so many short actions?

This thread is awsome!!! I have been a member for a few weeks and the OP is pretty close to what I have seen. I too am glad we have the freedom to argue like children about our favorite toys. The differing opinions is why I love this forum.:D
