What it like shooting a 50 BMG? And what is it used for?

From what I'm hearing from you guys the Urban Legend I've heard might be true. Do they have Depleted Uranium Rounds for the .50 cal?

Yes the US military stocks, and issues, Depleted Uranium .50 BMG munitions. Yes a T-72 tank driver was killed with one, but his hatch was open and he was sitting up through the hatch. The .50 BMG will not penatrate the front armor of a MBT.

I had the pleasure of shooting the Barrett 5 shot semi-auto.
The guy that owned it said it was more fun to watch "newbies" shoot it than to shoot it himself. It weighed ~30 lbs and kicked less than 12 gauge buckshot. I was standing ~10 feet behind the guy who shot it after me and the shock wave made my cheeks rattle.
We were on a 100yrd range and I was the only guy on paper. :-)

BTW, I understand that the military is (or will be) using the .50BMG sabotted to .30 (read >4000 fps). Anyone know if these rounds are available to the public?

To add to "The Lore Of The Big Fifty", somewhere back around 1950 or so, disremember, some wildcatter with more money than he knew what to do with made up a .22 on a .50 case.

It didn't work all that well.

Loud, though.

I have a project for any .50 owners out there:

1) Buy a chronograph.
2) Buy a .50 to .308 sabot.
3) Buy a .308 to .223 sabot.
4) Buy .223 bullets.
5) Put .223 bullet in .308 to .223 sabot.
6) Put .223 bullet and sabot into .50 to .308 sabot.
7) Put the bullet and the two stacked sabots into a .50 case after calculating the appropriate charge of powder to load.
8) Secure .50 rifle to a rest and position chronograph.
9) Load the newly made ammo into the .50 rifle.
10) Tie a string to the trigger and stand behind a brick wall.
11) Pull string.
12) Post on TheFiringLine.com the velocity that was achieved.

I was apalled by that video.

It is now clear, this 50 caliber rifle's only purpose is to kill and maime. Why do we tolerate the endangerment of our children's lives on a daily basis by allowing only Marines or military to obtain these weapons and arms? I demand that instead of a tax cut, Mr. Bush offer M2 and Barrett 82's to all civilians interested in owning such firearms. A comlementary 500 rounds of mixed .50 ammo should be included. When are we going to stop the insanity and start making these great equalizers common household items?

Ive got a Maddi-Griffen. As a matter of fact, .30 caliber bullets start coming apart arounf 4600 FPS. By way of the muzzelbreak, the .50 is quite comfortable to shoot. I put 70 rounds through mine the first time I fired it. The muzzleblast is quite horendous to those watching from behind you as the jets on my break are at 45 degrees,it will make your sinuses break loose. The only disadvantage to the .50 is it cost anywhere from 1.50 to 3 dollars a round to shoot. After shooting it though, my .300 seems kinda wimpish.

hathcock used the browning m2 50 caliber machine gun to fire a single round that took a viet cong rider off a bicycle at approximatly 2500 yards.
