what is your preferred caliber for hog hunting

For Texas feral hog between 100 and 200 lbs:

closeup: we use SKS and pistols(41 mag, 44 mag, 45ACP).

long distance: bolt actions rifles, most of us carry 270Win or Rem. 7mm Mag.

They can run fairly large here in southeast Louisiana, but the average is around 250 lbs. that I've run across (Swamps offer a great deal of things to eat for hogs). I like using a .44 magnum redhawk with a 7.5" barrel. Long shots here are infrequent in the thick undergrowth. If I had an area where decent distance shooting was likely, I'd probably choose a .308 or .30-06 with the appropriate load, but rifle choices are personal things, and anything similar should work fine, too.

Used to hunt 'em in Central California with either my .45-70 or .270. Both worked fine. I've had friends use anything from a .264 Mag up to .300 Weatherby, and a rancher we hunted with would pull out his AR-15 or a .22-250 to get it done. He wasn't much concerned about meat though, so he'd keep shooting till they dropped.

Big gun or little gun?

im just starting pig huning but im hunting with my .250 savage. It may be smaller but with soft nose bullets and a little higher grain than usual iv'e brought down some big bucks ranging in the 120 pound dressed range. 243 might be a little light and 30-06 and 270 would really do the job. also concider a 7mm. you can use it for all big game.
