1911, period. When I get enough $ I will have one small enough for CC. For now I carry a 340 PD which is DAO. Does that make me a hypocrite or just too poor to get what I really would like?

My choice depends on whether this handgun is used in self-defense during my waking hours or when I'm out cold in the middle of the night.
Hey, you just can't leave people hanging with such a vague statement. You need to elaborate on the different platform for night and day use. :)

Fine PBP, I'll play your little game. :p I carry a Colt CCO 1911 during the day and I have a Beretta 96G-SD with Surefire X200 on the nightstand at night.

That's better. :)

Although I would liked to have heard the details of why you prefer each platform for it's specified use. You are in Huachuca, AZ after all...what else could you possibly have to do other than entertain us. :D

Dual Action Revolver. Single action for accurate target shooting and practice. Double action for safe, dependable, and reliable self defense.

"What is your favorite platform for a SD handgun?"

In order of preference:

SA auto - Traditional SA hammer cocked or firing pin fired SA w/ safety

Pre-set DA hybrid - First pull is partially cocked, second can be full DA is gun fails to fire.

Well, there's the... uh... oh, and I could always go... uh... alright, you got me. There's nothing to do here but go out into the desert canyons and shoot. But that is my plan for tomorrow, so I guess I'll entertain your request today. :p I prefer the 1911 for daytime use because I shoot it well and I like the SAO trigger. At night, since you never get enough practice in waking up and shooting within 2 seconds at the range, I prefer the DA/SA with no safety because the DA pull provides some safety without having to manipulate any other levers to get the gun into action.

I voted "other." My carry preference ins the HK P7M8, which is single action, but remains safely uncocked until you take a firing grip on it. At that point, the squeeze cocker makes it immediately ready for action.

Thanks, that makes sense to me. :)

BTW: I went to AIT there. It is not too bad of a place. The air was a bit hot and thin for a coastal guy like me but it could have been worse.

I know, it's a lot better than when I came here for AIT back in '98. But since I don't live down in Sierra Vista, I don't feel like making the drive south unless I really need something down there. And Huachuca City hasn't changed, it's still nothing more than a speed trap on the highway. But it's cheaper to live here than in Sierra Vista, and I'm only 3.5 miles from the east gate. The good thing is that the gun community in this area is awesome. NRA memberships amongst the population are the norm, not the exception. 90% of my co-workers own guns, and there are a lot of gunsmiths in the area. We try to have a monthly shoot north of Whetstone, and there is usually a good turn-out, and sometimes one guy brings out his belt-fed toys to play with. :D

It sounds like a little slice of heaven...a brown, hot, desolate, snake and giant insect infested heaven. :D

You should have been there in the early-mid 80's. It was not nearly as nice.

Conventional DA/SA revolver for me, although SA autos run second. At this point in my life the 4in. .357 magnum is pretty much my do all handgun. IT is what I started with(a S&W Model 19) and what I keep comming back to. I flirted with autos for SD when I was younger, hell I even carried a VP70Z for my CCW for a couple of years back in the late 80's. Of course I backed it up with an Astra Terminator 44mag snub.

I'm finding this a bit more difficult to answer than I should. What is my prefered SD handgun type?

Hiking/woods - SA/DA revolver - N-Frame Smith 45 Colt, as it were.

Everyday carry - Glock (LDA)

Misc - I've fallen in love with my new Para Ord. 1911 LDA.

The common link is the DA, but I'd be hard pressed to say which one it'd be if I could only have one method.

I mostly carry a Kahr and love the every-shot-feels-the-same trigger and no safety ... but I also carry a Kimber UCII, practice dropping the safety as I draw and enjoy the idea of 1911 reliability ...

For SD use? I prefer either a DA revolver or a DAO autoloader, I rate them equally. I can get by with a DA/SA autoloader, but that would be a 2nd choice. Personally, I don't want to be fumbling around with a safety when the time comes, and I happen to like the longer, heavier DA trigger pull from a safety standpoint. I like the "Point and Shoot" interface that the DA platform brings. Just point the gun at the BG and pull the trigger, it goes "Boom". Nuthin' fancy.

Whereas my first choice is the traditional da with no safety (ala, my SIG 220), I have no problem with and often carry a traditional da with a safety (ala, my Smith 6906 or my Beretta 92) with the safety in the "off" (fire) position.

I choose the true DAO option because under a stress inducing situation I do not want to fumble or attmpt to manipulate a manual safety. My carry choice is a SIG 239 with the DAK system for this very reason.
