What is your favorite assult style platform?

I have always been a fan of the Garand style actioned rifles and of course the AK action as well. But as I realized a need to scope these more powerful calibers, I found that it was more difficult to put one on any of the various Garand style rifles.

Also, discovering red dot sights and their usefulness, I found the AK doesn't lend itself well to light-weight and small sight bases. At least not until the LT Iron-Dot or MI's AK mini dot mount became available. But even then the AK is not modular, it didn't need to be.

I had never been much of a fan of AR rifles, at least not until they became available in alternative calibers. But after alot of research I finally went down that road. What I discovered was that they were relatively light, accurate and very dynamic. It is no problem to mount any kind of optic atop any flat-top AR. Along with the standard size AR rifle I purchased a .308 version, so essentially I have two different rifles following a similar design pattern with virtually the same controls, but intended for different purposes.

So, I guess I have to say that as of the moment, the AR platform is my favorite A-Style rifle, closely followed by the AK A-Style rifle. As good and reliable as the Garand style actions are, they are just limited by their design.

As someone who has also shot Table 8, the M1A2 is also my favorite platform. :D

That said, for assault rifles---AK47 all day. Reasonable accuracy, decent ergos, good medium size round for 2 legged targets, and 100% reliablity.

B.A.R.: Browning assault rifle. Are we allowed to own "battle rifles?"

 Browning Automatic Rifle, maybe?

I own an M1 rifle. I think by popular definition, this a battle rifle. I sure as heck am allowed to own it

I think there is some overlap between what is considered a "battle rifle" and an "assault rifle". The AR-10, Galil .308 and HK91 probably fall in that overlap zone.

Um, at least one Abrams has had an RPG-7 with a modern PG-7VR warhead penetrate the side armor, the entire interior of the tank, and buried into the other side, back in 2003. By a minor miracle none of the crew were killed or seriously injured
I didn't know that. Thanks, a little Googling and I found it.

I haven't been downrange in a tank since I retired in 1999, and I've never seen, much less touched, a Merkava. I'm sure that it is a fine tank, and I've known Israeli officers who were magnificent tankers. We learned a lot from the several who were loaned to us and served at the Armor School.

Unfortunately, the arms race between armor and missiles has been going on since Agincourt, and it will always be so.

Yet, I stand by my original opinion. My favorite assault platform is the M1 series Abrams. If I can get a battery of 155 in direct support and a flight of A10's loitering, more the better.

>Ergos, FCG, caliber and accuracy of the AR
>Long stroke gas system, mud-gun reliability of the AK
>Tunable gas port of the FAL
=The best of all worlds.

Yes, and mine is an AR-100

...Where the hell did Thunderbolts and M1A1/2's come into play!?!!?

I've always been a big fan of the G3, I like the forward cocking handle and feel of it. Otherwise I'd have to go...

1. G3
2. FAL
3. G36 (never shot one but handled and I think it's cool as hell)
4. STG43/44 (can't beat the classics)
5. Ar15/M16 Just because I know the thing so well

I used a M-16A1 in the Army and they are ok rifles in my opinion but I love the Garand action of firearms like the M1, M1 Carbine, M-14, M1A, and yes even the Mini-14/Mini 30. Just something about a nice piece of wood and steel that goes boom repeatedly and reliably.

He asked what our favorite assault platform is... I've been there, done that, actually like assaulting things. I did it for a living for awhile.

(He didn't ask about which rifle we liked best, he asked about assault platforms, and I think that I can argue successfully that a main battle tank is an assault platform.)
