I got this gun for free from a Freind. It is .22 lr six shooter. Sorry the pics arnt very clear. Camera is outdated. And no its not a ruger any thoughts thanks. The symbol on the grip is a RG

The side reads as follows:

Mod. RG 23
CAL. .22LR.
RG IND.
MIAMI. FLA.

Along with make and model it has Miami, FL. stamped on the frame by the hand grip. I have researched this and believe that the manufacture is a West German Company named Rohm Gesellschaft (RG) Industries. I can not find any company with that name in FL. I would like any information on this handgun, in particular, the age and value. Thank you in advance.

Stan, Rohm GmbH of Sontheim/Brenz produced cheap revolvers, starting pistols, gas pistols and alarm pistols for the U.S. marketplace during the late 1960s. RG revolvers were sold in the USA prior to the passage of the 1968 Gun Control Act and were imported by a Miami based company whose name I can't recall (hence the Miami, FL stamping). Rohm revolvers are usually identifiable by a round medallion in the grip carrying 'RG' and the model number. The RG-23 is a 22LR revolver with a six shot swing out cylinder and a 1.5 inch barrel. RG values fall in the $25.00 range... Marc

Based on the information you provided I have concluded that your gun is an RG 23.

Seriously, RGs are the quintessential Saturday Night Special. I would not recommend shooting this gun. They stopped importing them when the government insisted they not melt at room temperature.
 
Wow that is interesting. I shoot this gun every time i go to the range. I have had it for about a year and it works fine. What makes this brand so bad. :confused:
 
Cheaply manufactured. If you shoot it every time, it will wear out quickly. I've seen them with cylinders that had to be truned by hand, and that would leave power marks on the hand of the shooter. Not a precision made firearm.

For the record, it is about the same gun John Hinckley shot President Ronald Reagan with.
 
Mine isnt to that point yet. I dont even know how much use it had before i got it but it is still working fine. If I had to turn the cylender by hand i would just get rid of it, but it is not at that point
 
The frames and cylinders on these were made of cast metal, cheap metal at that. When the gov't mandated minimum melting temperatures for these parts most of the RGs didn't make the cut. A lot of guns were no longer importable after this reg went into effect. I'm sure the 22 doesn't stress the gun nearly as much as the 38 caliber (the other popular caliber) so if you're shooting it go ahead and have fun. But I would wear eye protection and a heavy glove.
 
Slightly off-topic: A friend had a wrecked motorcycle he was parting out. Someone offered him an RG and $100 for the rest of the cycle. He told them he would take the money, but they could keep the gun. It kinda hurt the person's feelings.

i think you guys are being a bit snobbish. :)

how bad can the gun possibly be? it is able to shoot a .22 projectile when the trigger is pulled, what more do you want out of a 30 dollar gun? i've been wanting the model 23 for a while, just cant seem to find a gun store that sells it, go figure :rolleyes:. no matter how bad it may seem the gun can kill, and i think that should be enough to earn respect, at under 30 bucks you dont have many self defence choices.

steelersfan, how is that thing holding up? still shootin' allright? hows the accuracy & reliability? i'm hoping it doesn't spit lead out the sides. :)

this would be a perfect gun to keep in my jacket when i'm working in the woods or roaming around town at night :D

For the record, Reagan was shot w/a Model 14, also a .22. I have no idea what the differences in the models are. Note also Sirhan B. Sirhan used an RG to assassinate Robert Kennedy.

Oh - the importer might have been Navigar.
 
Hey I had one of the same! surprisingly accurate! kept it a few yrs, then tried a detail strip and clean heh heh heh never got it back together! wipe it down and run a patch thru her and see how long it lasts!
 
I had one of those little RG .22's and it was a great little gun. It made an excellent doorstop, a good paperweight, and was fairly accurate if I threw the entire gun at the target.

Yes, RG revolvers will usually work OK for a while, and they all passed German proof tests. But they were not made for durability. I have seen them free-wheel, as some one mentioned, have seen barrels come out when fired (the barrel is glued in, not screwed), have seen loading gates blow out, etc.

Mostly, they just wear out. The frames are a zinc alloy, and the guns soon begin to rattle. Oddly, I have never seen either a barrel or cylinder actually split or blow out, so there is some quality there.

In the 1960's, they sold for as little as $9.95; dealer price was $7, so you can imagine what the factory cost was. (The anti-gun gang pretends that inflation and GCA 68 never happened; their propaganda still rants and raves about "the availabillity of cheap $9 pistols, a favorite of criminal gangs", etc.)

I sold mine to some feller for 50 bucks. I still feel guilty about that.
