What is the worst gun related advice you have ever gotten?

That's a shame to hear - you had what might have been an enjoyable experience ruined by the other participants. For my money, there's nothing that I'm so competitive about that I would risk alienating a newcomer - how will our favorite sports survive without new blood?

That experience was in stark contrast to the reception I got at the bowling pin shoot: People volunteered their guns AND EVEN AMMUNITION to get me to try shooting different classes..... they encouraged my kids to try it, and they love it now, too......

..... these shoots were run by the same club. I joined the club, and still shoot pins when I can..... I have no idea if they even have bullseye matches anymore.

The NSSF really ought to get behind local bowling pin matches- after that first match, my next 4 handgun purchases and my entry into handloading were a direct result of "needing" to have guns and ammo for each class.....

worst gun related 'comment'....

"Don't worry, it's only a .22"

........My Dad's best friend was killed by two young boys screwing around with a .22 unsupervised.

A gun store employee once told me that a magazine that had a "Restricted Government" stamp on it was nonetheless pre-ban. He said it was likely for law enforcement or from a police gun, but was made before 1994. He said they sold Glock mags with LEO markings on them all the time.

This was in a ban state. That advice could get me jailed.

WD-40 ruined the finish on my Para frame conversion back in the 80's. I was lucky they warrantied it for me. I don't think I've even touched WD-40 since.

"They developed the 357 magnum to shoot through engine blocks."

Actually...

Now, that wasn't a priority in the development, but it was certainly part of the pitch.

Before I ever heard anybody else say this, a guy told me he's got a 45 because even if you hit him in the pinky, well, you may have heard this before.

"Don't shoot old ammo! Yer a darn fool if'n you do, cause that stuff gets more potent with age. . . tole thet Walta not ta be storing his bullets fuh so long, he gots some old stuff in that house of his, gonna blow up his gun. Youlda thought a reloading person would know that."

Remember an old guy telling me that when I was a kid, talking about a guy we knew who reloaded. Walter had given me some of his reloaded ammo to shoot.

Worst advice I ever heard? They weren't to me, but I did overhear them.

GBC (Guy Behind the Counter) to female customer. "This is what you need. If anyone (blanks) with you, just point it at them and shoot till the guns empty." Even at the time I wondered just what his definition of "(blanks) with you" would be, and what hers might be?

Same GBC...to a male customer. "It's easy to do a trigger job on a Smith & Wesson (revolver). You just take the sideplate here, off, and use a file......" I couldn't listen anymore and left.

Bought a Hawes .22 single shot break open pistol as my first handgun by a slimy salesman. What a waste of money for a junky gun.

Here's one I didn't see in here: "Never use the slide release on a 1911, it lets it slam forward and it'll mess up the gun."

Because it doesn't slam forward every time you shoot it...

You don't need to take a gun with you to Alaska. Those bears are more scared of you than you are of them.

I took two.My 12 ga 97 and my .44 SBH. Good thing.

I said something dumb at a gun range/store "once".

After shooting (Having fun) and getting ready to leave.

At the counter, some young guy was looking for his first handgun, and he asked what was the most accurate handgun was.

Well, I said "all (Meaning the modern handguns) handguns are all accurate, it's all the shooter", and without explaining myself, I had to shut up after about 10 people were giving me a blank stare.

Ooops. Time to shut up!!

TBS, I have a Beretta Bobcat 21s 22lr that shoots high left, but it does it every time, so, I shoot low right. Bingo!:D

I love that gun, it serves me well.
