What is the typical mark up on a gun?

The difficulties of being a low volume new gun dealer is, you are pretty much at the mercy of your wholeseller. Often we are only offered excess inventory (slow movers for him) or odd ball stuff that is difficult to move. Seldom can we get our hands on the latest and greatest in demand guns as the big volume dealers get first pick. Not whinning thats just the way it is.

And those are excellent points to remember when folks are dealing with their local mom and pop and complaining about their prices. Folks need to remember that slow movers eat up the profits from fast movers - it's all about turning the inventory; if it is sitting, it is costing the store money that could be put to better use. Many times, in order to get the popular models, a store has to buy a certain amount of other models - which may or may not move that well in that location. That's a killer for a small business

The difference in the cost of handguns by region amazes me. Orangello paid $570 for a XD45. In my local store they are $419 NIB. I have 8 inches of snow outside but the firearm prices are good.

Beentown

That does sound like a smokin deal! My purchase was early in '08 when the obamascare prices were if full effect and was for the 5"/"tactical" model with the XD gear (2 mags, brush, holster, two mag holder, mag loader, lovely plastic case), but regardless, $419 is awesome to me.

The GM peeps are still listing them at $649.99 (maybe that was their price when i checked, not sure), but they aren't OD green. I don't see me patronizing them much.

Here is the add for my LGS

The handgun prices seem pretty good. About the same as Buds or even less in some cases. Of course Bud's prices are shown cash, plus you have to add the FFL Transfer and background. Your LGS/State may vary.

What is your state sales tax?

If I had a store like that with those prices consistantly I would be in deep.

That's a nice local shop, Been!

I bought the Beretta PX4 Storm Subcompact from Bud's (Best deal I found) for $533 + 30 for transfer and the 3% surcharge from Bud, for a grand total of $579. If your sales tax was like here, I would have paid $554. Savings of $25...buuuuutt, your local tossed in 100 rounds of ammo on top of it! Cheap Wal-mart ammo around here adds another $20 value to that. Nice!

My local gun store stopped taking trades on used guns a few years ago. He sells tons of guns on consignment. He asks you what you want for your gun and adds 15%. He will advise you if your price is out of line. He has been in business for probably 30 years and knows what the market prices in the area are. If you listen to him, your gun will usually be sold within a week, and he will write you a check, or if you prefer, give you store credit on your next purchase. He always has several counters full of consignment handguns, and it is a real treat shopping there. His inventory changes everyday, so he gets a lot of traffic. He will put what ever price you want on the gun, but sometimes if you are out of the market, your gun will sit in the case for months. It costs $20.00 to get your gun back if you change your mind because he has to transfer it back to you on an ATF form. This guy has figured it out for this area. His store is always packed with customers, and I always see people with their wallets out every time I go there. Also as a seller, you don't have to worry that the gun will come back to haunt you should your previously owned gun is used in a crime. So I guess my point is that 15% works for him in his business the way he does it.

If you go to Buffalo gun supply the mark up is high and they don't dicker. Combine that with low trade in values and a staff full of holier than thou, know it all, makes for a lovely shopping experience.

I go there to fondle the stuff I am interested in then buy elsewhere. Cheaper.

Sometimes dealers don't pay the same amount for the same gun. The dealer price is often related to the quantity of guns purchased at one time or over a period of time. In other instances, a gun's wholesale price and availability may be contingent upon the dealer agreeing to buy other models in the gun maker's lineup.

6.75% sales tax. Goes by the county.

XD9 service:

$419.99 purchase price
$28.35 sales tax
$448.34 out the door

What is the typical mark-up on a gun?

With some past experience...
I would say a real--no discount gun shop gets between 40% to 60% markup.
If you can find an FFL that is classed as a "KITCHEN TABLE" (No inventory just mail order.) dealer they might go to 10% to 15% mark-up.
