usaammo.com is about the cheapest you're going to find...

9mm - 1,000rd case - $169.00 + shipping

40S&W - 1,000rd case - $275.00 + shipping

The price can be significant. I own guns in both. Obviously, I shoot the 9mm's more.

I can appreciate cheaper ammo but I wish that USA Ammo would list the ballistics of their once fired or new ammo....muzzle velocity at least.

Anybody here use this (USA) ammo? I've never heard of them until today and they are awfully cheap. Is it worth trying?

Depends on the source. From several places (including my Wal-Mart) .40 is often cheaper.

Lucky Gunner ammo:

1000 rounds 9mm Federal FMJ - $225
1000 rounds .40 Magtech FMJ - $280

Not a substantial difference for me. Fifty bucks for high levels of practice with a round I consider superior.

In my area .40S&W is about $ 5 - $ 6 more for a 50 rd box than 9mm ... but it'll also depend on what kind of bullets you're shooting ( in 9mm 115gr, 124gr, 147gr ) --- and as you go up in grain, the box is typically more expensive.

The solution is to learn to reload / invest in some equipment ( and save at least $ 5 on a box of 9mm ) ....and shoot twice as much for the same amount of money ...but I like reloading. Its a great part of our hobby...

Just purchased a few days ago at Walmart (Tulsa, OK area):

Winchester White Box, 9mm, 115gr FMJ, $19.99 for box of 100 (20 cents each)

Winchester White Box, .40 cal, 165 gr FMJ, $27.99 for box of 100 (28 cents each)

NOT counting steel case ammo, in general 9MM is $2-$3 a box of 50 cheaper than .40 S&W. A box of federal FMJ "plinking" ammo at my LGS costs aroung $20.00 before tax, if memory serves the 9MM FMJ "plinking" ammo is about $17.50 or so.

coryrichter94,

Welcome to the forum and welcome to the internet! There is a good deal on information available to you on the internet including at places like this...

http://www.midwayusa.com/browse/Bro...3&categoryId=7508&categoryString=653***691***

At sites like these, and others, you can see first hand the answer to your questions. The internet may seem, at first, like a strange and foreign place to you but in time you will see that ...it is.

In my area, depending on where you get it, 9mm ammo typically runs $10-15/50 rounds and .40 S&W runs $14-18/50 rounds. These prices are for U.S. made FMJ range ammo (JHP's and el cheapo steel-case stuff may vary in price a bit more). I don't own a .40 so I don't really pay particularly close attention to who has the best price, but locally Wal-Mart has the best price on 9mm with Federal Champion 115grn FMJ running about $10/50 rounds. I could probably get ammo cheaper by ordering in bulk, but I don't shoot enough 9mm for that to be worth the trouble (I mainly shoot handloads in my revolvers).

I just went through this, (picking a caliber for a new purchase.) I love the 357Sig and 45 acp, but the ammo price kills me. I purchased a 9mm. I almost got the 40 S&W because it's not that much of a difference but for a shooting gun the three or four dollars a box adds up. For my area the Win white box is ok price but I've been buying Federal cheaper at Wally World, $10.47 for fifty. When you look at the difference in price after 5,000 rounds it makes a difference.

I didn't consider price of ammo when I bought my G23, although I should have. Not as readily available as 9mm.
A drop in $100 Lone Wolf 9mm barrel and a couple of 19 mags will soon pay for themselves in that respect. :)

I can appreciate cheaper ammo but I wish that USA Ammo would list the ballistics of their once fired or new ammo....muzzle velocity at least.

For the commercial reloads, they can't list the muzzle velocity, without a big disclaimer. Using mixed brass for the ammo means the velocity will vary, depending on which brand of case you are looking at, at the time.

At my walmart, the difference between a 50rd box of 9mm Federal, and the same box of .40 is $2. Its the 45acp that's way more expensive.:(
