what is the most common handgun for police and leo in the states?

I don't know what most agencies are carrying, but I found this about the NYS Police:
(Albany, NY – November 9, 2006) - New York State Police Superintendent Wayne E. Bennett announced today the purchase of 5,400 Glock pistols. The Glock model 37, a .45 G.A.P.* caliber, was chosen after careful consideration and recommendation and will be used to upgrade the current issue Glock model 17, 9mm pistol.

We use Glock21SFs. G30SFs and or G27s for admin types and detectives. Have been with the 45 round since 1985 when we first went to S&W 645s We recently switched from HK USP C 45s. County PD carries HK USP C 40s. IMHO H&K is over rated....County PD are currently looking at switching over possibly to Glock or M&P. Other area PDs and Sheriffs are mostly Glock. State Police use Sig 229 357 Sigs.

The M&P is a completely new design with no parts interchangeable with old Smith and Wesson designs as far as I know. It's also considered, again as far as I know, to be the best Smith and Wesson auto produced in recent memory.

If you just go to Wikiped
ia search a specific gun it will tell you about how many LE agencies use the gun. At least when I was researching the m&p it had all that stuff on the site. Its pretty interesting because it tells all the different countries that use them

I live in a small town. COPS here really dont get paid very well. I have seen everything from Glocks to Rossi revolvers in service.

In my city they carry Sig (not sure if it's P226 or P229) in .40; they recently switched to .40 from .357 Sig.

In a small city just north of here, where I used to work, they carry G21 and G30.

I'll be the party pooper of the group...

No one on this forum has any clue what is most used by LE today. I've heard the Glock % estimate for the last 10 years now, and the number seems to stay the same every year...

I'd be willing to bet that people in the LE depts. at various gun manufacturers don't have an accurate idea either.

Around here in pa and nj i see a lot of everything. Theres alot of Glocks, some Sigs, and some Springfield XD's. Im not sure on the caliber, but im guessing mostly .40

In Arizona, it's mostly G22s or 23s and some XDs. Although I have seen a few with revolver's on their hip. From what I understand, they can carry the hollow point of choice, so long as it is the one they qualify with.

My brother's department issues
-3rd Generation Glock 22 with 165gr Speer Gold Dots
-Colt M4 with Federal Tactical 5.56

His personal BUG
-3rd Generation Glock 27 with 165gr Speer Gold Dots

Our highway patrol issues the same.
