What is the longest distance you practice at?

All of my serious training is for within 15 yards/45 feet. Most of it is within about half of that distance. I carry purely for S/D, and am visually handicapped. I'm confident of my ability to see well enough to judge when to shoot within the 15 yard mark. Although I can see well enough that I can legally drive, I wouldn't want to count on seeing faces well enough to recognize somebody from a greater distance. If I can't recognise them, the circumstances where I would be *certain* that I needed to defend my life against them would be limited, although that could (of course) occur. (They're shooting at me, for example.)

We'll see what the pros say about that when I get to more intensive training later this summer.

for handguns it varies: 20ft -25 yrds mostly depends on what im practicing for. most self defence situations are gonna be close range 20 feet or less. so thats where i spend most of my time.

for rifles.... 200+ yrds. ANYBODY should be a dead on marksman at 100 or less with a rifle. I do most of my rifle work (my m14) at 200-500 yrds.

I like to try and hit a 1' square steel plate at 100 yards with my CZ 75. Challenging, and rewarding hearing that PING when it connects. Usually one in three or four standing, one in two if I sit with a rest. Probably would do better with FMJ, but all I can afford is my cast boolits.

Depends on what you mean by longest and practice.

I shoot paper out to 600yds. Every time I do it is practice for the next time I shoot paper out to 600yds.

I shoot paper at 200yds. It is practice for when I shoot bambi.

Handguns out to 50yds, but that's just for fun not practice.

I shoot pistols from contact/point blank range out to about 15 yards every time I shoot, which is often. That's in a pistol pit, with movement.

On the rifle range, I work transitions from rifle to pistol and I'm shooting the pistol at silhouettes and clay pigeons on a bank at 25 yards.

I assumed the question was handguns.

About 300 yards. Not much more, tho there's a few guys around that shoot longer distances. 300 isn't impossible. We have an 18" hanging plate at a lazered 300 yards, and there's good rocks around it that are fun to shoot at.

Long barrels aren't neccesary for shooting distance. They may be easier to shoot to some degree, but mine are mostly 4" in DA's, 4 5/8 in SA's, and my ex's old G-19 seemed to work pretty well at 300. The 1911 takes a lot more sight to reach 300 than the 9mm does.

Been fooling around with one handed shooting for several years. It seems popular around here to a degree. It really makes you pay attention to the basics shooting distance with one hand. Two handed, kneeling, or sitting is much more productive, but not quite as much fun.

Range practice with pistols

Sometimes 10 yards off-hand.
Most Times 25 Yards off-hand.
A Few times 50 yards from a rest (mostly with a 10MM).

IF I had open land of my own, I would like to set up a duelling tree and pace off 10 and 25 yard shooting points..
I'd also like to set up a 'fifteen or 18 inch gong' type target at 50, 75, and at 100 yards.

10 - 25 yrds with handguns, because 25 yrds is the max at the indoor range I shoot at.

I really don't see any need of shooting a pistol beyond 25 yrds. I practice for SD/HD shooting only.

pistol : out to 150 yds. With a 8" bbl .357 revolver. Usually a maximum of 50 (rarely) with other pistols, 10-30 is common. It depends on what I’m practicing for.
Rifle : depends on which one. The most accurate one out to 800 but usually 200-600. Other rifles: 100-200 mostly

25 and 50. One of the staff members posted a marvelous tip - The farthest you should shoot is to consistently hit the end of a coffee can, which is about 4 inches. Right now, I'm at 40 yards.

I usually practice at 15 and 30. I've tried 100 but it's generally luck if I actually hit the target. Oddly enough, my Hi-Point .45 is half-decent at 100 yards, probably because of the low recoil.

Alot of practice at 25 yards and down to 5 yards.

But with my main carry gun, and I guess my others as well, I go out to 100 yards. By the way: my main carry guns are all full size, Sig 220 .45, Sig 226 .40,etc.etc.

At this moment, I feel confidant of making hits on a 35 gallon barrel, at 125 yards 100%, and 75% at 175.

Here's a thread I recorded some of my long range shooting over a few weeks:

I practice at long ranges:
#1. It is fun. getting enough practice where you can guestimate the distance of a rock out to almost 200 yards, and nail it with a HANDGUN within the 2nd shot is a blast.
#2. If it's your carry gun...be prepared for anything.

oilfieldguy Depends to me what i am shooting. For defence-short barrled guns 3 to 15 yards. 22 pistols for fun up to 25 yards. Towards hunting season long barreled scoped revolers at 50 and 100 yards with a few to 150 and note rise and fall. 100 yard zero. Don't shoot them short ,maybe 25 yard minimum with again a few short just to know the placement.

Handguns:

.22 LR and .44 SP - 100 yards. 200 yards is more like plinking than practice.

.357 stubbie - 20 yards.

Rifles:

200 yards

Airgun pistol - Shoot a lot of at 15 feet in my shop.

Pistol - usually 25 yards but sometimes out to 300 yards.

Rimfire Rifle - usually 100 yards.

Centerfire Rifle - usually 200 yards but sometimes out to 600 yards.

Qualifications go to 25 yards. 3 to 25 yards. I shoot my handguns at ranges much farther than that whenever I can. 100 yards is often the max at established ranges, but 200, 300 or beyond are not too terribly difficult to find if you search around. I understand many folks do not do this, which is fine, I just enjoy it as do many others. Hitting a bucket at distance is just plain fun.

most of the time indoors I spend at 25yards off hand 7yards has become almost boring. when I get out doors I usually work on 50yards but will go out to 200yards..
