What is the longest distance you practice at?

I saw a couple of guy at an unofficial range (large pit) making 3-liter bottles explode from about 50 yards. It got me to thinking that maybe I need to widen the gap at which I regularly practice. I guess 10-15 yards is about as far as i work out with a pistol because I usually have a rifle handy.

Any thoughts?

Are you asking about handgun or rifle?

Rifle-Most common is 100 yards (South jersey ranges are awful)

Recently I have started shooting 300 more than 100 though. Its fun to test your skills at farther ranges.

25 yards....

Because that is the limit at my indoor range. When I do get to shoot outdoors, it is usually in the 75-100 yard range but that is pretty much just rifle-work.

I stick to between 7 and 10 yards. Occasionally I'll go longer, but that is just for fun and not for practice. Since most SD happens at 7 yards or less, that is where I spend my time practicing.

I regularly shoot 50 - 60 yards with pistol and up to 500 yards with 7mm Mag. I figure if you can hit it farther away that just makes hitting it up close that much easier.

I do prefer a laser on the pistol at long distance but I can do it either way.

I am specifically talking about pistol shooting. Those guys were shooting big handguns. Long barrels. Maybe .357 or .44 mag with a lot of arch.

With revolvers I routinely shoot out to 25 yards off hand, sometimes off the bench. Occasionally I'll shoot prone or sitting at 50 and 100 yards with the revolver. 50 yards is about as far as I can go to hit an 8" paper plate almost 100% of the time with open sights.

I practice at 3 yards, 7 and 12, which is the longest I shoot these days. I can't see well enough for normal 25 yard target practice. If I ever have to shoot at anything further than 25 yards it had better be still and painted barn red. :D

I have a 7.5" barrelled Freedom Arms in 357 with a 4x scope that I target shoot at 100 and 200 yards... accurately.
My unscoped handguns, not as far, due to my eyes.

Pistol is mostly 5-15 yards, sometimes 25 yards, and rarely 50 yards just to see if I can hit anything. Rifle is normally 50-100 or 100-200 depending on the caliber. With a couple of my rifles I shoot the 300 or 600 yard.

25 or 50 yards

25 and 50 yards, depending on what competition class I'm shooting/practicing for.

25 yards is the maximum distance for Duty Pistol class, and 50 yards is the maximum for PPC class... and I'm terrible at 50 yards with a Smith & Wesson M&P9. :D I think I needs me one of those long-barreled Smith Revolvers that some of the guys use, like a 686 with a 6" barrel...

On occasion, some of our club members have tried 100 yards with a 9mm handgun just for giggles, and the results were pretty surprising. One member managed to put 10 rounds out of 12 in the black of a B27 target. That member was definitely not me.

Cheers!

For Tactical Drills ... I shoot at anywhere from 10 feet to 30 feet ....with my handguns. I don't see much point in going beyond 30 feet - when you're drawing from a holster / shooting double taps or triple taps on a target with reload drills etc mixed in ...

I probably do most of my practice at the 15 Foot and 21 Foot markers on the range I go to a couple of times a week.

7yds (seldom)
15yds (every time)
25yds (every time)
50yds (once in awhile)
My "range" is set up in my backyard so i have my target rests set at those distances:cool:

I just see no need to practice shooting something close enough to hit with a stick

Mostly at 15 and 25 due to the indoor range I usually shoot at. If a pistol shoots really well at 25 yards I will shoot it at 50 and with something like a scoped TC Contender I will even shoot it at 100 yards.

Out to about 40 yds!
But with a Walther P22 w/ 3.5" brl, a Sigma SW9VE w/ 4" brl &
a S&W M60-9 with a 2 1/8" brl,I don't have the handguns to "reach out there"!

I have a couple of nice .22LR target pistols that I like to shoot off the bench at 50 yds occasionally.

I practice 2-hand, freestyle at 25yds, with a shot timer, regularly just to make sure I can hit open field targets that seem to be more and more popular at the USPSA matches in my area.

But mostly, I do IPSC style drills (or at least what I can get away with when I'm stuck on the conventional range) at 10 -15 yds.

I generally shoot at short distances with my handguns. I see more benefit in being able to see and correct rather than shooting large groups and not knowing what mistakes I may be making. I will however push the distance at times. I like to shoot steel plates at 200y with my M&P 9C. I don't always hit them but I'll usually hit more than miss. I also like to shoot my Uberti Remington 58 at 25-50 yards. It is very accurate. For rifle I'll shoot anywhere from 100-600 yards. The range has a 1000y firing point but I haven't gone there yet.

For pistols, it depends upon the caliber. I normally shoot standing two handed and I practice at our steel swingers (4" & 6") at 50yds with all my pistols instead of paper targets.

I use my G21L 45acps to 100yds. I shoot my G20L 10mm out to 150yds and give the 200yd steel plate a go often. I just got my custom G24 finished and I've run it to 100yds so far.

For rifles, I shoot my ARs out to 500yds and I shoot my 357mag Rossi leverguns past 300yds using a tang sight. I even shoot my little Henry 22lr out to 175yds with the Williams receiver sight.

I figure that if I practice long distance shooting, I'll develop an 'aim small, miss small' style. So far, it works for me but then I have a range I can do that on and many are limited.
